    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing synthetic quartz glass that can prevent unfixed floating soot from adhering to a melt growth face of an ingot and prevent bubbles from generating in the growing quartz glass and reduce the flow rate of oxygen and hydrogen gases supplied from a burner and thus improve energy efficiency. SOLUTION: A raw material to form quartz glass is supplied into a high-temperature flame gas region formed by the burner. The synthetic quartz glass is manufactured from the quartz soot that is generated from the raw material to form quartz glass. A surrounding jacket to surround both the whole burner and a growth part of the synthetic quartz glass as well as a gas-exhausting tunnel to cover the surrounding jacket and to surround both the downstream part of the high-temperature flame gas region and the growth part of the synthetic quartz glass are installed. A gas for discharging the floating soot flows through the surrounding jacket and the gas-exhausting tunnel in the direction of discharging the floating soot.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for producing a base material for synthetic quartz glass, in which glass fine particles not caught on the accumulating/growing surface of a soot body (an accumulated intermediate) can be sufficiently prevented from being accumulated on the wall of a synthesis furnace and secondary particles can be sufficiently prevented from being taken in the accumulating/growing surface of the soot body.
      SOLUTION: The apparatus for producing the base material for synthetic quartz glass is provided with: the hollow synthesis furnace 10; a burner 11 for jetting a silicon compound and combustion gas into the synthesis furnace 10 to form a flame; a target 12 for accumulating glass fine particles produced in the flame to form the accumulated intermediate (the soot body) 13; a discharge port 14 formed on the ceiling surface of the synthesis furnace 10; and an air supply port 15 formed around the arranged part of the burner 11 of the synthesis furnace 10.
