    • An apparatus for cutting through a continuously longitudinally moving wire has a pair of cutter drums centered on and rotatable about respective generally parallel axes and having respective radially outwardly open generally helical wire grooves of substantially the same pitch but opposite hand. These drums are radially relatively closely spaced and define a nip. A guide element is integral with and fixed rotationally on one of the drums and is formed with a helical guide groove of the same hand and pitch and centered on the same axis as the respective wire groove but is axially offset therefrom. A cutter blade is provided in at least one of the wire grooves adjacent one axial end thereof. The two drums are synchronously rotated at the same peripheral speed by a drive. A swingable guide tube is directed generally tangentially at the nip and has a downstream end closely juxtaposed with the drums at the nip. The wire passes longitudinally through this tube toward the drums. An entrainment element or follower is fixed at an axial spacing on the downstream end of the guide tube and can be swung into engagement with the guide groove so that when thus engaged the downstream end of the tube is displaced at a rate determined solely by the rotation rate of the drums for perfect guiding of the wire in the mating drum grooves.

    • The disclosure is directed to a new scrap kick-out conveyor for a continuous buttweld pipe mill installation. The pipe mill includes a scrap cut-off saw, located between the welding mill and the subsequent processing mills, and the kick-out conveyor is located downstream of the scrap saw. The conveyor includes stock advancing rolls, for supporting and advancing the pipe stock, and inboard and outboard guide rails for laterally confining the pipe. Means are provided for retracting selected portions of the outboard guide rail and for diverting selected portions of the inboard rail to lie across the pass line, such that the oncoming scrap section is diverted off of the conveyor. An inclined discharge apron is provided adjacent the outboard guide rail, leading to a scrap bin. The retractable portion of the outboard guide rail is arranged to retract downwardly, and is provided with an inclined upper surface to facilitate gravity discharge of the scrap sections.

    • An apparatus for subdividing an axially moving product length is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pair of shear blades mounted on opposite sides of the path travelled by the product length. The shear blades are rotatable about non-parallel axes, and are arranged to effect a cutting action on the product length. The cutting action occurs along a reference line which intersects the path of product travel and which also bisects the angle included between the rotational axes of the cutting blades. The shear blades are driven continuously by a variable speed drive which is adjustable to equate the peripheral speed of the blade portions cutting the product with the linear speed of the product. The lengths of the resulting subdivided product sections can thus be varied by shifting the point at which the path of product travel intersects the aforesaid reference line and by making a suitable adjustment to the rotational speed of the shear blades.
