    • A method of manufacture of staple glass fibers by drawing a plurality of glass filaments, from a bushing and chopping them directly into staple fibers without intervening winding and storage is characterized by initiating the drawing by forming the filaments into a coil on the circumference of an auxiliary roller, forming an initial winding by rotating the roller with progressively increasing surface speed until the filaments advancing towards the roller attain the normal production drawing speed for the bushing, then diverting the filaments while still travelling at that speed, and without breaking them, into driving contact with a cutter back-up roll driven with substantially the same surface speed as the production speed, advancing the diverted filaments by means of the roll into a cutting zone whereat they are both severed from the initial winding and continuously chopped into staple fibers.

    • An improved flying saw of simplified and more economical construction is disclosed which operates smoothly with reduced vibration and which performs in an improved manner at higher operating speeds. The machine has a main crank arm with a rotary saw blade at one end and an adjustable counterweight at the opposite end, a stabilizing crank arm with a counterweight, and a connecting rod causing the arms to rotate in unison. Both arms telescope to permit simultaneous adjustments of arm radius while screw jacks adjust the height of the crank axis relative to the work. The work is supported on a wheel having a special sliding-block eccentric which moves the wheel in a vertical direction to deflect the work into the path of the rotary saw blade. A quick-drop support bracket permits lowering of the wheel and its eccentric away from the path of the work in an emergency situation so that flow from the mill need not be interrupted.

    • PURPOSE: Provided is an improved flying shear which can certainly operate at all rolling mill discharging speed. CONSTITUTION: A shear(10) has a preceding edge(28) and a following edge(24) which rotate in mutually opposite directions along an upper and a lower shaft(14,16) located above and below a horizontal plane. The radius of gyration of the preceding edge(28) is longer than that of the following edge(24). Those edges are composed and arranged so that they may cooperate in a radially overlapped positional relation within cutting areas Z1, Z2 provided at intervals in a perpendicular direction from the horizontal plane. A switch(30) conducts a longitudinally moving product such as a bar, a rod and a similar one so as to cross the cutting area from the horizontal plane. The product is therefore divided into a front and a rear segment by rotary edges (the preceding edge)(28) and the following edge(24).
