    • An automobile engine (E) capable of changing over the operating area thereof between an operating area with all the cylinders being in action and one with a certain number of cylinders being at rest by stopping the operation of valve operation mechanisms for suction and exhaust in selected cylinders out of a plurality of cylinders, in particular, the engine comprising an engine revolution sensor (12), a boost pressure sensor (10), ignition driving devices (23, 24, 25), and a control device (15) for controlling a mechanism for stopping cylinders and the ignition driving devices, wherein an operating area with certain number of cylinders being at rest is determined from information on engine revolutions Ne and boost pressure Pb, and wherein a torque fluctuation of the engine occurring when the engine operating area is switched from an operating area with all the cylinders being in action to an operation area with a certain number of cylinders being at rest, and vice versa is offset by the retard amount processing of ignition timing or by idle-up so as to prevent the generation of torque shocks resulting from extraordinary change in output occurring when such switching is carried out to thereby prevent stall or improve drivability.
