    • An apparatus is described for producing concave or convex optically magnified facets about a gem, each facet being a curved surface that is a section of a cylinder. It utilizes a mandrel having an exterior and/or interior cylindrical abrasive surface. The surface is contacted by a gem indexed and adjustably held by a gem support structure. The mandrel is angularly movable about its central axis. It can also be reciprocated along the axis to prevent formation of random striations across the facet surfaces. An adjustable stabilizer can be preset to engage a dop attached to a gem at a location adjacent to the mandrel. This assures accurate reengagement of the gem after movement from the mandrel for interium inspections during the faceting precedure. The method of producing the optically magnified facets requires successive indexing of the gem and bringing it into contact with an angularly moving cylindrical abrasive surface. The resulting gem can have one or more curved facets about its outer surfaces having the form of a section of a cylinder. These facet surfaces can be either concave or convex. A preselected pattern of grooved facets can be produced across the curved facets by polishing then against a complementary moving mandrel surface.

    • A surgical stapler comprising including an elongated handle portion having a longitudinal axis extending between a distal end and a proximal end. The stapler includes an end effector disposed at the distal end of the handle having a staple cartridge housing, and an anvil. The end effector has an open position wherein the staple cartridge and the anvil are spaced apart, and a closed position wherein the staple cartridge and anvil are closely adjacent to each other. The stapler also includes an elongated trigger. The distal end of the trigger being pivotably attached to the handle between the handle's distal and proximal end. The trigger has an open position wherein the proximal end of the trigger is spaced apart from the handle, and a closed position wherein the proximal end of the trigger is closely adjacent the handle. The trigger is linked to the end effector such that moving the trigger from its open to its closed position moves the end effector from its open to its closed position. The stapler also includes an actuator for ejecting the plurality of staples from the cartridge towards the anvil. The actuator includes a rotatable knob mounted onto the distal end of the handle, such that progressive rotation of the knob in a predetermined direction progressively ejects the staples.

    • A method for stapling tissue using the steps of providing a surgical stapling device having a handle with a longitudinal axis extending between a proximal end and a distal end having an end effector disposed thereon, which is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. The end effector comprising a staple cartridge housing a plurality of staples, the end effector having an open position and a closed position. The device also has an elongated trigger having a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the distal end of the trigger is pivotably attached to the handle. The trigger has an open position wherein the proximal end of the trigger is spaced apart from the handle, and a closed position wherein the proximal end of the trigger is closely adjacent the handle. Lastly, the device has an actuator for ejecting the plurality of staples from the cartridge towards the anvil, the actuator is a rotatable knob mounted onto the distal end of the handle. The method further involves the step of moving the end effector to its closed position by moving the trigger towards the handle. The method also involves the step of ejecting the plurality of staples from the cartridge by rotating the knob.
