Preferably, the arithmetic processing device executes the first generating process and the second generating process in a time-sharing manner.

    • A musical tone generation apparatus creates musical-tone-waveform samples based on waveform samples stored in a waveform memory by each sampling period. Herein, a high-speed bus such as a PCI bus is provided for data transfer with regard to the waveform memory. A waveform buffer is provided to temporarily and selectively store the waveform samples which are read from the waveform memory. A sound source operates in accordance with time-division-channel timings which are provided by dividing a sampling period by a number of channels. The sound source performs interpolation calculations on the waveform samples of the waveform buffer to create a musical-tone-waveform sample in accordance with each time-division-channel timing with respect to each channel. The apparatus generates a read address whose value is changed in response to a pitch of a musical tone. When the waveform buffer does not store the waveform samples which are necessary to create the musical-tone-waveform sample, the apparatus accesses the waveform memory in accordance with the read address to read out the waveform samples, which are then transferred to the waveform buffer via the high-speed bus. Herein, burst reading operations are performed on the waveform memory, regardless of the time-division-channel timing. Thus, it is possible to reduce an occupancy time of the high-speed bus by the sound source as well as a number of times to access the waveform memory.

    • The PC audio circuit described interfaces with and provides audio enhancement to a host personal computer of the type including a central processor, system memory and a system bus. The PC audio circuit includes a digital signal processor (DSP) for processing wavetable data and generating digital audio signals for a plurality of voices. The wavetable data is stored in the host computer's system memory and transferred in portions, as needed by the DSP, to a smaller, low-cost cache memory included with the PC audio circuit. The DSP processes several frames of data samples for an active voice before processing another voice. Processing in this manner alleviates concerns about the percentage use of system bus bandwidth and the maximum allowable system bus latency. These concerns are further alleviated by deriving frequency compensated wavetable data and storing it in system memory to be retrieved by the DSP for generating digital audio signals having high frequency ratios. Digital audio signals generated for each active voice are accumulated in cache memory. When the digital audio signals for all active voices have been accumulated, the accumulated data is transmitted from the cache memory to an external digital-to-analog converter. Since wavetable data is stored in system memory, the cache memory is smaller and less expensive than the local memory in prior art PC audio circuits. Thus, the described PC audio circuit has a lower overall cost.

    • A PCI-based system and method for performing wavetable music synthesis which uses system memory to store wavetable data is provided. The system and method utilize the benefits of the PCI bus while mitigating the disadvantages introduced by having to arbitrate for a shared system bus. By using system memory for storing wavetable data, a more cost effective personal computer audio system can be produced. In the preferred embodiment a computer system is provided that includes a system memory storing wavetable data samples, a PCI bus, and a PCI-based audio synthesis device. The audio synthesis device includes a PCI bus interface, a synthesizer, and a plurality of buffers coupled to the PCI bus interface and the synthesizer for transferring wavetable data samples between system memory and the synthesizer. The number of buffers defines the maximum number of voices which can simultaneously be active. The operation of the buffers is controlled by a buffer manager. The buffer manager, in conjunction with the buffer depth, maximizes allowed PCI bus latency by filling the active buffers when they have become a certain amount empty. By filling all active buffers in a given bus mastership, the device minimizes the total number of PCI bus mastership requests to a manageable value. Additionally, the audio synthesis device includes a plurality of write-back buffers coupled to the PCI bus interface, the buffer manager, and the synthesizer, for audio effects processing.

An audio codec controller comprises a first interface unit for performing data transfer to and from an audio codec, a second interface unit for performing data transfer from an external memory, and a data buffer for buffering data received from the external memory via the second interface unit. The controller further comprises a capture register for receiving from the data buffer data requested by the audio codec, and temporarily storing the received data.
