    • Methods and apparatus for singulating articles in a singulating conveyor having an elimination, or separation, conveyor to strip articles not in single file and recirculate or redirect them. The elimination conveyor has a pass-through conveyor belt portion that passes articles received single file from an infeed conveyor off the downstream end of the singulator and a laterally adjacent second conveyor belt portion with rollers that rotate to divert articles not in single file toward or off the side of the elimination conveyor. A recirculation conveyor receives articles diverted off the side of the elimination conveyor and returns them to the infeed conveyor. For refeeding diverted articles to the singulating conveyor downstream, a conveyor receiving articles from the downstream end of the second conveyor belt provides a path parallel to the pass-through articles and feeds them onto a downstream registration conveyor to merge back into the flow.

    • A split-level singulator for arranging and conveying articles in a single file. The singulator comprises a central conveyor and two flanking conveyors advancing in a conveying direction. Rollers in the conveyors protrude through the thickness of the conveyors and ride on underlying supporting bearing surfaces that cause the rollers to rotate as the conveyors advance in the conveying direction. The rollers in the central conveyor rotate in the conveying direction. The rollers in the flanking conveyors rotate in directions oblique to the conveying direction to direct articles conveyed atop the rollers downstream and toward the central conveyor. The tops of the rollers of the central conveyor are vertically offset above or below the tops of the flanking oblique rollers.

    • Apparatus and methods using conveyor belts (12, 14) with activated diverting rollers (28, 28' ) to maintain the leading edge of a conveyed article (10) while changing the conveyance direction. A first conveyor belt (12) advancing in a first direction (22) abuts a second conveyor belt (14) advancing in a second transverse direction (23). Both belts (12, 14) have diverting rollers (28, 28' ) that rotate on axes oblique (30, 30' ) to the conveyance direction. The diverting rollers (28, 28' ) are activated by rolling on underlying bearing surfaces in the vicinity of the junction of the two belts. The diverting rollers (28) in the first belt (12) direct the article (10) toward the second belt (14). The rollers (28) in the second belt (14) direct the article toward a side of the second belt (14). An article lying on both belts simultaneously rotates by the action of the two sets of diverting rollers acting on opposite ends of the article. The orientation of the rollers and their rotation maintain the leading edge of the article.

    • A boot seal for a vertically traveling water screen and a method forming a boot seal. The boot seal comprises a bent plate extending from an attachment end to a free end. The attachment end attachedes to a frame at the bottom of a channel of water flowing through the screen. The seal is positioned upstream of the upward-moving upstream face of the screen. The free end of the bent plate in a rest position is close to or lightly touching the upstream face of the screen. The bent plate has a concave surface facing the screen and acts as a cam follower to a passing lift element's cam. As the lift element slides along the cam surface, it pivots the boot plate in an upstream direction against a spring bias. When the lift element clears the boot plate, the boot plate springs back to its rest position.
