The barrel in position rests on rollers 6 which may be rotated by means of a handle 9 and endless chain 7 in order to bring the bunghole into position to discharge the contents of the barrel either directly on to the road surface or into a shoot 10 which is provided with an adjustable slot 11.

In a modification, the spindle c is a continuation of the piston-rod b and slides through the top of the cylinder e, a shield being provided to keep out dirt and moisture. To prevent the operative fluid from being admitted in the cylinder e before sufficient pressure has been attained in the compressor, an adjustable spring-controlled valve t closes the port r which leads to the space above the piston. Dec. 17 Speed indicators.-A combined clock and speed indicator, described as applied to motor road vehicles and ships' logs, has an annular rotating band of paper surrounding the clock face and receiving perforations at regular intervals of distance, the total distance being recorded on counting-apparatus. The box a, Figs. 1 and 2, contains the clock b, upon the hour arbor c of which is a frame d with clips f holding the paper ring e. A star-wheel p on the spindle p receives motion from the vehicle, and rotates, by means of the screw o, the annular wormwheel n, which is concentric with the clock face and rides on rollers n , its position being indicated by the pointer q which travels once round the graduated clock face in one mile. Upon the completion of every mile, the cam projection m on the wormwheel presses back the arm l, and thus pulls the slide i and the paper e held therein in the slit i so that a perforation is made by the fixed pricker g, which passes through the hole h in the slide. Simultaneously, the contact effected between the parts t, u causes the electric bell s to ring. The counting-apparatus r is operated by a stud r' on the worm-wheel. In the case of a ship's log, a combination of worm and spur gearing is employed to transmit motion from the driving-spindle to an annular spur-wheel, which occupies the place of the worm-wheel ; as the pointer q, Fig. 7, rotates with it, moving in the direction indicated, the projection z thereon forces the pricker x through the paper e, and causes its tail to make the contact 1, 2 in the bell circuit.
