    • 450,885. Arc-rupturing in switches. ANDERSON, J., 137, Aldridge Road, Perry Barr, Birmingham. Feb. 7, 1935, No. 3954. [Class 38 (v)] An arrangement for suppressing arcing in A.C. switches comprises a motor g rotating synchronously with the current and driving a commutator f having a slip ring a and two half-rings b, c interconnected at d, e. The ring a is connected by means of a brush m to the movable switch member j, and the members b, c are connected to the fixed contacts h, i through brushes k, l, the arrangement being such that the trailing ends of b, c are under the brushes at current-zero of the cycle. In operation, suppose that when j separates from h, i, the segment b is under the brush k, then an arc is only formed between i, j. At the first zero, the commutator circuit shunting the break h, j is broken arclessly at b, k, and the arc between i, j is put out by the short-circuiting thereof by the segment c coming under the brush l. A similar action occurs if the arc is formed between h, j. For polyphase working, the above arrangement is repeated for the various contacts. A more perfect break can be obtained by providing short segments b , c connected by rectifiers n, o to the segments b, c which are shortened slightly at the trailing end so that at current zero, the brushes bridge both segments. The rectifiers prevent current flowing from the additional segment to the brush.

[Class 38 (v)] The invention of the parent Specification is modified by mounting within the apertures in the pile of spaced plates i of non-magnetic material, an insulating tube q having a longitudinal slot r formed in one side of it, through which the arc can escape to the spaces between the plates. The fixed contact b is mounted in the tube q with slight clearance and extends downwards across several of the spaces. The central core has an insulating sleeve m, and insulating sleeves p surround the rods forming the return path for the flux. Insulating rings j separate the plates i from one another and enclose the spaces between them. When the movable contacts f are lowered to open the circuit, the arcs pass through the slots r into the spaces where they aro whirled round by the radial field set up by the coil. If the arc makes a complete rotation, it is deflected by the closed side of the tube and so prevented from joining either contact again. When first formed, one end of the arc can travel up contact b into the upper plates, but an insulating sleeve h prevents movement along the movable contact f.

    • 330,128. Anderson, J. May 28, 1929. Electromagnets; solenoids.-A magnetic shunt in the form of a second armature or core which is interposed between the actuating core, or armature, and an electromagnet and moves independently of the armature, is used to vary the time-lag of an automatic circuit-breaker. As shown in Fig. 1, a plunger d of a sucker or dashpot type of breaker moves axially, under the action of a magnetizing force produced by an overload coil e, to operate a trip or similar device through a tappet k. The plunger d is surrounded by an iron or steel sleeve f which, when acted upon by the coil, moves axially against an adjustable spring h or weight which bears on the underside of a collar j ; downwardly-projecting arms i formed integral with the sleeve f pass freely through the collar to engage the free end of the spring. The sleeve is loaded so that it moves only on heavy overloads, the magnetic force acting on the plunger d being then diminished, thus ensuring a longer delay in operating the breaker. Fig. 4 shows the invention applied to a pivoted armature type of actuating gear, in which the armature n is encased in a spring-loaded sheath r, the armature and sheath having a common pivot. On heavy overloads the sheath moves under the section of the magnet to a position limited by a stop, where it modifies the action of the magnet on the main armature n. Specification 14812/11 is referred to.

Pigments.-Titanium salt solutions are liydrolyzed by adding the hot or cold salt solution to warm or boiling water to which has previously been added a colloid other than colloidal titanium oxide, for instance silicic acid. Solutions from which ferrous sulphate has, if necessary, been removed by crystallisation and containing about 5 per cent of titanous salts are preferably employed. To obtain composite pigments the solution may have an insoluble alkaline earth sulphate such as barium sulphate suspended therein; or a soluble barium salt solution may be added to a solution of titanium sulphate; or to a hydrolyzed solution of titanium sulphate, in which the titanium dioxide remains suspended, a solution of an alkaline earth salt may be added; or a sulphate solution of for instance sodium sulphate may be added and then one of an alkaline earth chloride; or the titanium dioxide obtained may be washed free from iron, mixed with an alkaline earth sulphate, neutralized, and calcined with or without the addition of a borate. In the last case the admixture of an alkaline earth sulphate may be omitted to obtain a pigment consisting substantially of titanium dioxide.

    • 220,166. Ellison, G., and Anderson, J. Aug. 15, 1923. Electromagnets.- In alternating - current electromagnets of the solenoid type, chattering of the plunger is prevented by providing a concentric enlargement on the outer end of the plunger and locating a concentric copper &c. ring a,t an intermediate position on the enlargement so that a phase difference 'between the fluxes on opposite sides of the ring is produced. In one construction, Fig. 1, the plunger a is provided with an enlarged head c into which is sunk a copper or brass ring d leaving a ring of iron at the periphery of the enlargement. A brass guide-bush k with a slotted portion entering the coil is provided. In another construction, Fig. 3, the plunger is provided with a flat head c, the ring d mounted on the fixed part b serving as a guide. In other constructions the enlarged head may be stepped to correspond with a stepped fixed part upon which the ring is mounted, or the co-operating parts may be conical with the ring located in an intermediate, position on the enlargement.
