    • A presente invenção refere-se a um processo e instalação para a produção industrial de blocos, pastilhas e granulados a partir de resíduos de origem vegetal, designadamente bagaço da azeitona e pó de cortiça. A instalação é genericamente constituída por uma linha de produção (5,6,8,9,14) controlada por uma unidade de controlo electrónico (15), em que o sistema de mistura (5) faz a mistura homogénea da biomassa para obtenção da pasta; depois um sistema de compressão mecânica (6) da pasta actua para redução da percentagem de humidade, segue-se a extrusão (7) da pasta para a forma pretendida (por exemplo pellets ou briquetes), compreendendo a extrusora (7) um sistema de lâmina corte das peças de pasta extrudida para obtermos os pellets ou briquetes, obtidas depois de secagem num secador (9) em contínuo, que inclui chaminé de dissipação de vapor de água. A invenção compreende ainda o produto produzido pelos referidos processo e instalação, geralmente na forma de blocos (briquetes), pastilhas ou granulados (pellets).

    • An artificial firelog is provided comprising combustible cellulosic material, a combustible wax binder and an amount of sodium bicarbonate effective to reduce emissions of particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO). The sodium bicarbonate comprises about 1% to about 10% by weight of the artificial firelog. Preferably, the sodium bicarbonate comprises about 2% to about 5% by weight of the artificial firelog. Besides substantially reducing PM and CO emissions during combustion of the artificial firelog, the undesirable odor associated with combustion of the wax binder is decreased and the firelog's total burn time is extended. Moreover, the sodium bicarbonate increases the "poke resistance" of the firelog making the log suitable for outdoor use and a natural appearing white ash develops during the course of combustion.

    • The present invention relates to a synthetic fireplace log and a process for making a synthetic fireplace log which is adapted to utilize wood derivative materials, such as wood chips, sawdust or virtually any wood-based product, such as paper and cardboard. The wood derivative materials are molded into a desired shape and held together with a non-petroleum based binder to form a synthetic fireplace log. In order to increase the flammability of the log, the synthetic fireplace log may optionally be sprayed or soaked with either a petroleum or non-petroleum-based flammability agent. Even though a petroleum-based flammability agent is used for soaking and/or spraying the synthetic log, the off-gassing is minimized since the petroleum-based spray is burned off relatively quickly. In other embodiments of the invention, a non-petroleum-based flammability agent is utilized. Suitable non-petroleum-based flammability agents include, for example, vegetable oil, corn oil, soybean oil, granola oil, and lard. These non-petroleum-based flammability agents produce no unpleasant odors. Moreover, the process for making the synthetic log is relatively simple and can be made from relatively inexpensive components, thus reducing the cost for making such synthetic logs.

    • A combustible artificial firelog assembly having a combustible base member and at least first, second, and third artificial firelogs is provided. The first and second artificial firelogs are coupled to the combustible base member and at least partially define a central cavity. The first and second artificial firelogs define at least one side opening therebetween that communicates with the central cavity. The third artificial firelog is supported by the first and second artificial firelogs and is disposed over the first and second artificial firelogs. The assembly further includes a metal retaining member disposed around an outer peripheral surface of the first and second artificial firelogs. The assembly further includes a combustible member that is disposed in the side opening that ignites the first, second, and third artificial firelogs.
