    • To improve operating reliability and reduce rope wear, rope hoisting and lowering devices are provided with one or more novel features. One feature is the provision of an adapter (3) to which accessories (50) can be attached and preferably clipped. Possible accessories are retainers with eyes for attaching hooks and single- or multiple rollers for forming pulley blocks. The adapter in essence comprises a number of slit-like recesses in which are transversely interspersed rod-shaped retaining elements (11, 9). One of these retaining elements (9) can move to allow an accessory (50) to be attached or released. Another feature is the provision on the draw side of a rope stop (102). The rope (103) passes through the rope stop (102) and drives a knurled roller (110). The latter, when the rope reaches a certain speed in the descent direction, couples with a pivoting brake extension (118) via a centrifugal clutch. The rope (103) is then pinched and blocked between the extension (118) and a counterpart (108). A third feature is the provision of guide rollers (36, 37) to ensure that the rope follows a crosssover-free helical path.

    • A pneumatically operated balancing hoist includes a housing forming a chamber therein and an inlet for communicating with the chamber. Slidably positioned in the housing is a piston. A rotating cable drum moves longitudinally within the housing with the piston. The rotating cable drum contains one or more longitudinal openings. When the rotating cable drum is moved longitudinally, rod mechanisms slidably and longitudinally engage the cable drum through one or more longitudinal openings, causing a flywheel located at one end of the housing to rotate. When the rotation of the cable drum exceeds a predetermined speed, one or more brake shoes pivotably mounted to the flywheel will move outwardly to contact a braking surface located on the interior of the housing to stop the rotation of the cable drum. The balancing hoist of the present invention us typically part of a material handling system which includes a balancing hoist, a trolley connected to the balancing hoist, and an overhead for supporting the trolley such that the trolley can roll provide for movement of the balancing hoist throughout a facility.

    • A cam following roller is one arm while a latching member is the other arm of a two-armed lever. The roller rides on the surface of a cam disk. The latch is supported by a spring in a released position relative to the stopping points of the sprocket as long as the predetermined speed limit of lowering a hoist is not exceeded. The sprocket is formed of two segments which are releasably connected with each other by screws. Brake pressure springs are arranged in the shape of a cup-spring package between the screw head and support surfaces of the sprocket segments.When the lowering speed of the hoist is exceeded, the latch is pressed into one of the stopping points of the sprocket, said sprocket arresting, by way of a brake lining, the brake drum and the cable drum connected therewith. In order to lower the load, one of the screws is slowly released and the contact pressure of the segments and of the sprocket with its glued-on brake lining on the brake drum slowly relaxes, such that the frictional resistance of the brake lining is slowly overcome. The heat generated during the braking process leads to an expansion of the brake drum and, thereby, again to increased braking, possibly again up to the point of arrest of the lowering motion. By again slowly releasing the screws holding the sprocket segments together, the load may be easily controlled and safely brought down.
