    • Techniques for booting a host computer from a portable storage device with customized settings with secure measure are described herein. According to one embodiment, in response to detecting a portable storage device inserted into a first host computer, the portable storage device is authenticated using a private key stored within the portable storage device against a public key stored in a second host computer over a network. In response to a successful authentication, data representing a personal working environment associated with a user of the portable storage device is downloaded from the second host computer over the network. After reboot, the first host computer is configured using the obtained settings of the personal working environment, such that the user of the portable storage device can operate the second host computer in view of the personal working environment. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

    • A combination valve includes a valve body having a valve body passageway with an inlet and an outlet opposite the inlet. An excess-flow seat is positioned within the valve body passageway approximate the outlet. A back-flow seat is positioned within the valve body passageway approximate the inlet. The valve includes a slug positioned within the valve body passageway, between the excess-flow and back-flow seats. A spring is positioned within the valve body passageway to bias the slug away from the excess-flow seat toward the back-flow seat. The excess-flow seat includes a bypass passageway that allows a predetermined amount of flow, when the slug is seated in the excess-flow seat. The slug prevents back-flow when the slug is seated in the back-flow seat.

    • A chainable Universal-Serial-Bus (USB) flash-memory drive has both a female USB connector and a male USB connector mounted on a printed-circuit board (PCB) substrate. A USB hub mounted on the substrate connects to a host through the male USB connector. One of the ports of the USB hub is connected to the female USB connector to allow the host to connect to downstream USB devices connected to the chainable USB flash-memory drive. Other ports of the USB hub connect to one or more flash controller chips that drive flash memory chips. The flash memory chips may be mounted on the substrate, or may be on daughter-cards that plug into sockets on the chainable USB flash-memory drive's substrate. The flash controller chip may be mounted on the drive substrate or on the daughter-cards. Several chainable USB flash-memory drives may be connected together in a daisy chain.

    • A low-profile Universal-Serial-Bus (USB) connector includes a substantially flat base structure that is received in the lower section of a conventional female USB connector, and includes metal contacts formed on an upper surface of the base structure. Wobble or vertical play is reduced by rails extending along side edges of the base structure that are partially inserted into gaps formed between the metal case and base structure of the female USB connector. Between metal contacts on the low-profile USB connector are raised ribs (dividers) that prevent undesirable damage or contamination to the metal contacts. The connector base structure of the low-profile USB connector can be separate or can be integrated with a circuit board that holds a flash memory chip and a USB controller chip.
