    • An exemplary system and method for using a network access system, such as a virtual private network (VPN), are provided. A user device may have a user session with a home agent. Additionally, an initiating security gateway may be in communication with the home agent, and a terminating security gateway may be in communication with the initiating security gateway via a tunnel (e.g., Internet Protocol in Internet Protocol (IP-in-IP) or Internet Protocol security (IPsec) tunnel). Further, a virtual local area network (VLAN) tag associated with the user session may map to a selector operable in a security policy database. The selector may be used to find a security policy defining an IPsec procedure, and the security policy may be applied to the tunnel. Also, the initiating security gateway may also include a Quality of Service (QoS) module that determines QoS markings for a packet traveling along the tunnel.

    • Systems and methods for controlling features and services in packet-based networks are disclosed. The present application provides systems and methods that include sending a first message to a network core device, and identifying a profile from user account information stored on the network core device. The profile specifies which features and services may or may not be implemented by an end device. In the systems and methods of the present application, the profile is added to a second message that is sent from the network core device to the end device. Alternatively, a single message or multiple messages containing the profile, regardless and/or independent of any prior message sent from an end device, may be sent from the network core device to the end device. These systems and methods may also use the session initiation protocol for their communications, with the end devices being session initiation protocol phones and the network core device being a session initiation server.

    • A method for operating a computer network for example a school to preload the content of web addresses on the local memory, i.e. the web cache memory for use in for example a subsequent lesson. The network comprises at least one device, a web cache memory, and internet access apparatus to connect a device on the network to internet using a web browser, relevant devices on the network being accessible to a network administrator and defined network users (teachers and pupils), a method whereby one of said defined network users (teachers) uses a modified web browser to define a set of web addresses (web pages) to be accessed, said set of web addresses being stored in the network, and operates the network to cause the content of the set of web addresses to be stored on said web cache memory, whereby the content may be accessed by the pupils during said lesson via the network without further access to internet. Limits or quotas may be set up for the amount of memory space usable by each user so as to prevent overload of the memory and users may be limited to access web pages defined by one or more preload tasks on the memory at a particular time. Software to allow the method of the invention may be loaded on the web cache.

    • A voicemail processing system and method for use in a communications system for returning a telephone call in response to a voicemail message is disclosed. The processing system comprises a processor for receiving caller identifying information relating to a voicemail message. The processor is configured to use the received caller identifying information to generate a file or script containing the caller identifying information for inclusion in an email, for example as an attachment. The email is preferably sent to a network device upon user request, so that the user can use the email attachment in conjunction with a software application running on the network device to automatically initiate the return of the telephone call using an associated telephone device. In a preferred embodiment, the software application is a Telephony Application Program Interface (TAPI) application.

    • A PC card communication system for facilitating both wireless and hardwire based communication between a host device, in which the PC card communication system is received, and one or more remote devices. The PC card communication system includes a wireless PC card conforming to a Type II form factor and containing two antennae, one each of which is disposed on opposing sides of a recess defined by a housing of the wireless PC card. The PC card communication system additionally includes a combination PC card conforming to a Type III factor, and which includes RJ-11 and RJ-45 connectors having a connector body centered in a front edge of a housing of the combination PC card. The recess defined by the wireless PC card, and the connector body of the combination PC card, are configured and arranged so that at least a portion of the connector body may be received in the recess. As a result of this arrangement, the wireless PC card and the combination PC card collectively conform to a Type III form when the connector body is so received and, accordingly, can be employed contemporaneously in a single Type III PC card slot of a host computer. This arrangement also permits removal of the combination PC card from the PC card slot without also necessitating the removal of the wireless PC card. Finally, such an arrangement contributes to a desirable separation of the antennae of the wireless PC card.

The channel performance is adjusted in accordance with the data flow.
