    • 350,387. Ornamenting pencils. ANGLO PENCIL CO., SMITH, M., and PRITCHETT, R., Bank Chambers, Pelham Street, Nottingham. March 5, 1930, No. 7167. [Classes 93 and 146 (iii).] Pencils and like articles are ornamented by providing the surface with a sensitized coating, and passing the articles in succession through an apparatus for exposure under a negative, the prints being subsequently developed and fixed, and toned if desired. A matt surface of pigmentized cellulose ester and gelatine varnish may be provided as an undercoating on which the gelatine or collodion sensitizing emulsion is applied. Finally a coating of nitro-cellulose varnish is applied to protect. the print. In the apparatus shown, the pencils 2 are fed from a hopper 8 by means of a plunger 3 reciprocated by solenoids 4, 5 alternately energized when a brush member 19 contacts with contact elements 20, 21 mounted on a rotating drum. The pencil is pushed from the hopper 8 between oppositely-rotating feed-rollers 9 into the printing- chamber 10, and a negative 12 is brought down into contact therewith by the action of solenoids 14, the circuit being completed by the brush 19 and a strip 22 on the drum. Further rotation of the drum causes the member 19 to make contact with a strip 23, thereby lighting a lamp 16 to make the exposure. Subsequently the brush moves out of contact with the strips 23, 22, thus permitting the negative to move upwards under spring action, and the exposed pencil is ejected by the incoming pencil. Mechanical means may be substituted for the electrical means described. Dipping-machines such as are described in Specification 325,638, [Class 95, Paints &c.], may be used for applying the sensitized emulsion, and for developing and fixing.

    • 432,622. Pencil holders. ANGLO PENCIL CO., Ltd., Bank Chambers, Pelham Street, Nottingham. Nov. 23, 1934, No. 33753. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1933. [Class 146 (iii)] In a propelling-pencil of the type in which the lead is propelled in short steps by pressure upon a knob at the rear end of the pencil, there is provided a longitudinal cavity which in section resembles two parallel tubes communicating with each other along their length, one of which contains the lead and guides it to the tip of the pencil, while the other contains a wire or rod formed with teeth and reciprocatable in the tube by pressure upon the end knob to which it is connected, the teeth being engaged by a pawl-like part extending from a lead pusher which is situated in the lead guide tube. The pencil holder 1, which may be of wood, synthetic resin, or other material is formed in one piece or in two pieces joined along their length and has a longitudinal cavity 15 of the shape referred to, in which may be enclosed twin tubes 2, 3, having a communicating passage 13 between the tubes. The groove 15 extends obliquely so that the tube 2 which is concentric at the front end with the tip 5 is eccentric at the cap end, while the tube 3 becomes concentric with the holder at the cap end. A pusher wire 6 having an enlarged front end is caused to move forward in the tube by a toothed rod 4 with which the bent end 20 of the pusher engages by passing through the passage 13, the pusher being held frictionally against backward movement. The rod 4 is connected to the end knob 9 so that pressure thoreon moves the rod forward to advance the lead, the return movement being effected by a spring 8. The amount of longitudinal movement of the knob 9 is limited by a projection 26 on a tube fitted on the end of the holder which engages a longitudinal slot 23 in the knob. The slot 23 is provided with an extension in the form of an inverted U, which permits the cap and rod 4 to be rotated when the knob is in its forward position, so as to bring the teeth 16 of the rod 4 out of engagement with the pusher so that it and the lead may be pushed back into the holder 1. One limb of the U-shaped extension slot is left open so that the knob 9 and rod 4 may be removed. The inner side of the metal tip 5 may be ribbed to prevent rotation of the lead and the end 17 may be split.

    • 309,250. Anglo Pencil Co., Ltd., and Smith, M. Jan. 25, 1928. Film evaporators.-In apparatus for drying materials of the type embodying an internally heated drum or cylinder on the exterior of which the material is fed in a wet, viscous or plastic state. the drum and the feeding means are subjected to relative movement whereby the material is fed thereon progressively and in a spiral course, and is subsequently automatically removed. A feed. hopper 2 is traversed on rods 3 over the surface of a hollow rotating cylinder 1 by the rotation of an externally screw threaded ,spindle 5 which meshes with an internally screw threaded nut 6 rotatably carried in a bracket 8 extending laterally from the hopper. A scraper 9 is mounted to travel with the hopper but in advance thereof so as to remove the spiral coating laid on the cylinder in the last preceding motion. On reaching the end of the drum the hopper is rapidly returned to its starting position by the action of a pair of loosely mounted pulleys 10, 11 having between them a clutch 12 slidable on a key by a shaft, the pulley 10 being driven by a belt 14 from a central shaft 13 while the pulley 11 is driven in the opposite direction by a belt 15 . The return motion of the hopper is thus obtained by direct drive of the pulley 16 and clutch 18 on the shaft 5 while the forward motion is obtained by indirect drive through the shaft 7. Automatic reversal of the drive is obtained by an arm 20 on the hopper displacing a lever 19 connected to the clutches 12, 18 and the scraper is simultaneously displaced from the drum by a fixed bracket 27 displacing a conical member 25 and causing a larger diameter of the member 25 to bear on the underside of the scraper arm 24. The feed of material from the hopper is also cut off on the return movement by a. pivoted bell crank lever 29 carrying a closure device 30. Alteration of the size of the hopper mouth is obtained by mounting one end wall 35 adjustably on the rods 3. The dried material removed from the drum is received in a trough 36 provided with a conveyer 37. Steam for heating the drum is introduced through the hollow shaft 13. In an alternative arrangement the cylinder 1 may be fixed and the feeding means with scraper rotated spirally around same.

    • 326,882. Anglo Pencil Co., Ltd., and Smith, M. Dec. 24, 1928. Transfers; transferring designs. - Pencils and the like are ornamented by the application thereto of a transfer having a backing of aluminium &c. other metal foil and securing the adherence of the transfer by the use of a fixing-medium which acts as a solvent for the varnish coating of the pencils &c. The transfers are printed in transverse spaced relation on a strip of gummed paper and are backed with metal foil, and, on application to the pencil &c., the foil underlies the transferred design. The transfer is supported, paper downwards, on a water-absorbent surface, the fixing-medium is supplied, and the pencil &c. is rolled, either manually or automatically, over the transfer. The supporting-device may consist of a hinged spring-raised plate having a leather surface covered with chamois leather or similar water-absorbent material. Alternatively, a rotatable drum 9, having a surface of chamois leather or like material, is employed. The drum dips into an adjustable water container 11, and excess water is removed by rollers 12 or the like. The strip 1 bearing the transfer is fed to the drum and fixing-solution is applied by rollers 15 from a container 14, the pencils &c. being then rolled on the transfers. The fixing-solution may consist of a solution of bleached lac in methylated spirit; for use with cellulose acetate varnish, a solution of gelatine containing sodium lactate or other high boiling-point solvent of cellulose ester, or a solution of gelatine in nitric acid may be employed; or with shellac varnishes, a strongly alkaline solution of gelatine may be used. After application of the transfers, the pencils &c. are coated with nitrocellulose or other transparent varnish.
