    • 176,593. Peter, B. H., Peter, L. H., and Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd. Jan. 22, 1921. Fluid-pressure; indicators, applications of. - The brake-cylinder exhaust valves of an electropneumatic brake system have two windings one of which is included in the circuit of the brakecylinder supply-valve while the other serves for the control of the exhaust valve, independently of the electric supply-valve. If the exhaust valve fails to close, the train-pipe is vented to give the usual automatic application of the brakes through an electrically actuated valve controlled by the exhaust valve. The system shown is of the kind described in Specification 162,753. The application valve 16 controls the supply to the brake cylinder 1 from the main reservoir pipe 6. and the release valve 61 controls the exhaust port of the triple valve 2 connected to the train-pipe 4 by which the usual pneumatic control can be effected. The valve 61 is provided with two windings 62, 63 of which the winding 62 is in series with the winding of the application valve so that energizing the train wire 10 opens the valve 16 and closes the valve 61. The winding 63 is connected to the train-wire 11 by which the valve 61 can be controlled for holding the brakes applied or for graduating the release. The windings 62, 63 are so wound and connected that should they accidentally become traversed by current in series, with each other, the magnetizing: effect is neutralized and the valve is not actuated. The means by which the failure of the release valve 61 effects the venting of the trainpipe 4 through the driver's valve and a valve 23 included in an interlock train-wire 12 are similar to those described in the above-mentioned Specification. In this case, however, the moving element of the release valve is provided with contacts 65, or is otherwise arranged to close the circuit of the valve 23 and train-wire 12. The application valve may be provided with contacts such as 65 included in an indication circuit for proving the operation of the application valves throughout the train.

    • 218,706. Peter, B. H., Winter, H. J., and Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd. March 10, 1923. Fluid-pressure brakes controlled either electrically or by variations in train pipe pressure. The complete release of the brakes by electric means is prevented by interposing a loaded check valve in the passage leading from the brake cylinder to atmosphere. The braking system shown in Fig. 1 comprises a driver's valve 3, triple valve 1, auxiliary reservoir, and brake cylinder 2, and an electrically-controlled release valve 7 controlling the exhaust from the brake cylinder through the pipe 29 to an exhaust port 25. When the valve winding 9, Fig. 2, is energized, the rod 20 is raised to open the exhaust valve 20 against its spring 22, but when the brake cylinder pressure has fallen to a predetermined value, the check valve 26 closes under the aotion of the spring 27 to prevent further release, complete release being effected pneumatically. The winding 9 is energized by tilting the handle 19 of the driver's valve to close the contacts 18 by means of the pivoted arm 30, this action being permitted only when the handle is in the " lap " position.
