    • 18,941. Chace, R. B. Dec. 20, 1910, [Convention date]. Combing-machines. - In a Heilmann combing- machine, the backwardly and forwardly rotating piecing-roll is driven by means of a train of gearing which always maintains the shaft in positively-controlled and constant gear connexion with the main driving- shaft. In the preferred form of the invention, the piecing-roll shaft 10, Fig. 6, has mounted upon its extremity one element 25 of an epicyclic train of gearing. The second element 26 is mounted upon a sleeve on a shaft 27 journaled in an arm 16 of the frame and in the hollow extremity of the shaft 10. The intermediate element 29 of the train is secured to the shaft 27. A gear 30 is mounted upon the sleeve and. is driven by a gear 31 on a shaft 32 upon which is a starwheel 33. The shaft 27 is driven through a gear 35 by a gear 34 mounted upon a sleeve on the shaft 32, which sleeve also carries a mutilated pinion 36. The starwheel 33 and mutilated pinion 36 are driven intermittently by a member driven directly from the main drive shaft, in such a manner that when the star-wheel is rotated the mutilated pinion is locked, and vice versa. When the mutilated pinion is locked, the intermediate element of the epicyclic gear is held from rotation, and the piecing- roll shaft is rotated in one direction; whereas, when the star-wheel is locked and the second element of the epicyclic gear is held from rotation, the piecing-roll shaft is then rotated in the reverse direction. The star-wheel 33 is driven by a stud 45 on a plate 44 secured by bolts 53 to one face of a gear 41, Figs. 2 and 4, which is mounted upon a countershaft 39 driven through spur gearing 47, 48, 50, 51, 52 from the main drive shaft 15. The plate 44 also carries an interrupted circular lock-ring 46. The gear 41 is also the driving-gear of the mutilated pinion 36 and has a single group of teeth adapted to engage with one or other of the two groups of teeth on the pinion 36. A plate 42- carried at the side of the pinion 36, arranged to overlap the gear 41 and to be engaged by the edge of a corresponding finger 43 secured to the gear 41, is provided to start the pinion slightly in advance of the engagement of the teeth and thus avoid the effects of wear on the teeth. The epicyclic gear may be enclosed in a box-like frame containing lubricant. In a modification, the epicyclic train is composed of spur-wheels instead of bevel-wheels. The combing-cylinder shaft 12, Fig. 2, is driven by spur gearing 14, 13 from the main driving-shaft 15. The feed-roll 6 is driven by a pin-wheel 24 on the combing-cylinder shaft 12 and a starwheel 22 on a counter - shaft 21 and by spur-gearing 20, 19.
