    • 726,772. Heat treating food in cans. LENZBURG, H. C., and MUNZ, E. May 2, 1951, No. 10340/51. Class 49. In apparatus for the continuous sterilization of cans, the cans are conveyed in a current of liquid, e.g. water. The cans 13, Fig. 1, may be conveyed from a rotary drum steam sterilizer 3 by liquid flowing through a pipe system 7 connected to the outlet 8 of the sterilizer. The pressure of liquid in the pipe system may counteract the steam pressure in the sterilizer. Air may be admitted through a pipe 9 to provide an air-pocket between liquid and steam and the temperature of this air may be con-. trolled by a thermostat 11. A pressure-reducing valve, through which cans and liquid pass, may be incorporated in the pipe system and, in order to keep the level of liquid constant at the inlet end of the pipe system, the pressurereducing valve may be by-passed through a float-controlled valve. Cans may be sterilized in a pipe-system 20, Fig. 3, through which they are conveyed by liquid heated by steam injected through a pipe 28 or by conduction through the walls of the pipe system. The pipe system may comprise inlet and outlet pipes 21 and 22 which may be connected together so that heat may be exchanged. Inlet and outlet valves through which both liquid and cans pass, may be incorporated in the pipe system. The outlet valve may be constructed so that cans are cooled under pressure by a cooling liquid. The conveying liquid may be circulated by a pump 12, Fig. 1, or 23, Fig. 3, and its quantity may be regulated by a valve 39, Fig. 1, or 26, Fig.3. The cans may be conveyed in a horizontal rotating position or in a vertical non-rotating position.
