    • An electrochlorination apparatus is provided for generating a sodium hypochlorite solution. The apparatus comprises an electrolytic cell (2) and a brine tank (5) that is located above the electrolytic cell (2). The brine tank (5) is adapted to supply a predetermined volume of a saturated brine solution to the cell (2) via a gravity feed. A flow meter (22) is provided for connection to a water supply and adapted to supply water to the electrolytic cell 2 via valve means (25, 26). A controller (7) controls operation of the valve means (25, 26) whereby a predetermined volume of water as measured by the flow meter (22) is also supplied to the cell (2) in combination with the brine solution so that the cell (2) operates to produce a sodium hypochlorite solution of a predetermined concentration. Preferably, water is also supplied to the brine tank (5) via the flow meter (22) and the valve means (25, 26) and the controller (7) controls operation of the apparatus using a batch process wherein in each batch the controller (7) operates the valve means (25, 26) to supply predetermined volumes of water as measured by the flow meter (22) first to the brine tank (5) and then to the cell (2) or vice versa. In this case the brine tank (5) is adapted to output the same said predetermined volume of the saturated brine solution to the cell (2) as the predetermined volume of water supplied to it via the flow meter (22) and valve means (25).

    • A water treatment apparatus (l) comprises a vessel (2) that defines a chamber (3) adapted to contain a water treatment chemical (4) over which a dosing liquid can flow from an inlet (6) to form a dosing reservoir (8) at the bottom of the vessel (2). A supply (5) of dosing liquid is connected to the inlet (6) of the vessel (2). The interior of the vessel (2) communicates with a conduit (9) along which an entraining pressurized flow of water can be fed for treatment and via an opening (10) in the conduit (9) that is connected to a bottom outlet (11) of the vessel (2). A venturi (12) is located in the conduit (9) adjacent the opening (10) so that the velocity of the pressurized water is increased as it passes over the opening (10) and entrains a dosing stream from the dosing reservoir (8) into the pressurized flow. The venturi (12) also applies suction to the interior of the vessel (2), which draws dosing liquid into the vessel (2) from the supply (5). In this way, the production of the dosing stream takes place under negative pressure conditions so that if the integrity of the vessel (2) is compromised during operation, the flow of dosing liquid into the vessel (2) will immediately cease and there can be no pressure build-up within the vessel (2) of dangerous fumes.

    • A chlorine dioxide solution generating apparatus is provided for use primarily in the supply of a chlorine dioxide solution for water treatment. The apparatus comprises a reaction chamber (l) that is supplied with metered quantities of an acidic solution and a chlorite or chlorate solution from separate sources (5, 6) whereby a reservoir (2) of a chlorine dioxide solution is generated and retained within the reaction chamber (1). A conduit (20) is provided along which a pressurized flow of a motive fluid is fed and with which the interior of the reaction chamber (1) communicates via a dip tube (7). A venturi (28) is located in the conduit (20) adjacent an outlet (23) from the dip tube (7) whereby suction is applied to the interior of the reaction chamber (1) by the pressurized flow of motive fluid. The suction draws chlorine dioxide solution from the reservoir (1) whereby it is entrained into the flow of motive fluid in the conduit (20). A controller (10) is provided to control the flow of motive fluid along the conduit (20) and the metering of the supply of the acidic solution and the chlorite or chlorate solution to the reaction chamber (1). Preferably, the metered quantities of the acid and chlorite or chlorate solutions are supplied to the reaction chamber (1) via respective first and second supply pipes (3, 4) that each incorporate a volumetric flow meter (11, 12) and valve (13, 14) the opening and closing of which is controlled by the controller (10) dependent on the volume of solution that flows through and is measured by the volumetric flow meter (11, 12). Advantageously, the conduit (20) is fed with the motive fluid from a pressurized supply of liquid to be disinfected by the chlorine dioxide solution and the pressurized flow of the motive fluid is metered and controlled by a third volumetric flow meter (25) and a third valve (26) the opening and closing of which is also controlled by the controller (10).
