    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for sensing a property of the environment to which the apparatus is exposed. SOLUTION: The apparatus for sensing the property of the environment includes a) a means for generating a beam of coherent radiation, b) a planar type waveguide which includes i) a first region which enables the propagation of a radiation in the region as a first action of the exposure to the property of the environment and ii) a second region, which is different from the first region, which enables the propagation of a radiation in the region as a second action of the exposure to the property or the environment, thereby in which the second action is different from the second action, c) a means for coupling the beam into the planar type waveguide and d) a means which decides the difference in phases of the first part of the beam after the beam propagates in the first region and the second part of the beam after the beam propagates in the second region, and the apparatus has a structural characteristic that the transfer of the beam via the planar type waveguide is limited only to a single mode of the beam.

    • A closed tube system is used to guide a number of cars around a fixed path and a series of pumping stations are located around the path. Each station is defined by a fluid flow pump section and a car by-pass section which has its opposite ends associated with the inlet and outlet respectively of the pump section. The pump is operated normally so as to create a tendency for reverse flow of air through the by-pass section so that a car in the section adjacent the pump outlet will be held against a pawl-type stop in the car by-pass section by positive pressure. Four methods of car injection are proposed. The first is to create a forward flow of air in the car by-pass section by temporarily throttling the outlet of the air by-pass section to create jet-pump action. The second is to increase temporarily the resistance to flow or to disconnect the pump means temporarily in order to reduce the flow in the air by-pass section which transiently induces a forward flow in the car by-pass section. The third is to transfer some of the linear momentum of an incoming car to the resident car or cars primarily by means of naturally entrapped air column and secondarily by impact through elastic bumpers. The fourth is to use an externally powered mechanism to push the resident cars forward a distance of one car length.

    • A chromatizer including an apparatus for and method of effecting the analysis of chromosomes including means for establishing an image of at least one chromosome, means for digitizing the distance each arm of the chromosome is from a preselected reference point, and means for automatically computing a number of quantitative measurements of the chromosome, including the length of each arm and the centromere index. The digitizing means includes means for identifying and recording the location of a plurality of points along each arm of the chromosome relative to the reference point. The establishing means includes means for superimposing the identifying means onto the image of the chromosome. The computing means includes means for displaying the computed quantitative measurements.

    • A mass transit system for use in moving a load carrying vehicle along a predetermined route between a number of load handling stations. The mass transportation system includes an unobstructed tube transport means located along the predetermined route. A vehicle provided with antifriction support is conveyed through the tube transport means by the momentum of driving air provided by one or more pumping devices which extracts a fraction of the air flow and substantially immediately reintroduces the air into the tube to create or restore the necessary air momentum. The tube may be continuous or non-continuous and is characterized by uniform cross section and the fact that it provides the support for the vehicle. The vehicle is shaped in cross section so as to substantially fill the cross section of the tube but not completely, so as to allow driving air to flow continuously within the tube even though the vehicle may be traveling at a speed substantially less than the mean velocity of the driving air, as on acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle. The vehicle body is also shaped to provide high drag characteristics so that it may travel within the tube at substantially the same velocity as the driving air. Loading and unloading stations are provided in the system in open communication with the ambient atmosphere, thereby allowing ease of loading and unloading. Each of the pumping devices used for delivering the driving air to the tube transport means is positioned between loading and unloading stations and is capable of producing a high mass rate of air flow at very low static pressure and the loading and unloading stations for the vehicle are positioned at points within the tube system where the static pressure is at or near atmospheric pressure.
