The usual door 5 (Fig. 3) for pushing into the body 5a of a refuse vehicle refuse charged through apertures 11 in the door is operated by a ram 17 disposed outside and below the body 5a and connected to the door through a link 21 which is of rectangular section so that it makes sealing engagement with the edges of a slot through which it passes in the bottom of the charging hopper 13 and which has an upper surface 25 shaped so that it is always in sealing engagement with the forward edge of a cowl 24 extending over the slot. The links 21 may carry rollers 26 running on guides 26a, and the edges of the slot and of the cowl 24 may be formed with sealing strips of rubber or other material. The lids 11 of the side-by-side charging apertures have deep rearward flanges 11a to increase the height to which refuse may be piled in the hopper 13. The door 5 may be turned about trunnions 16 when the body of the vehicle is tipped or the trunnion 16 may be carried by arms 29 (Fig. 6) operated through links 31 secured to the vehicle when the body is tipped; the door is guided as it is raised by engagement with abutments 35. Specification 680,174 is referred to.

    • 726,103. Packing material into refuse vehicle bodies. GIBSON & SON, Ltd., J. March 17, 1953, No. 7291/53. Class 78 (4). A paddle device is rotated by power about a shaft 9 (Fig. 1), through the angular spacing between two adjacent paddles to push material from a curved platform 8 concentric with the shaft 9 into the body 2 of a refuse vehicle. The paddle device illustrated comprises arms 10 at each end of the shaft 9 on which are pivoted plates 12 between which extend the paddles A, B. The plates 12 are urged by springs 44 against fixed cams 13 so that the paddles move with a feathering action as the device rotates. A wiper or brush 17 at the end of a shield 15 pivoted at 14 and normally resting against a stop 16 engages the working faces of the paddles as they pass. The device is shown mounted within a tail gate structure through an aperture 6 in which the refuse is loaded when the paddles are in the position illustrated in which one paddle closes the entrance to the body 2. The tail gate structure may be moved by power or gravity about a pivot 4 when the vehicle is to be unloaded by tipping: alternatively the body 2 may have a dumping bottom. The platform 8 may be integral either with the tail gate structure or with the body 2. In an alternative construction the paddles A, B are secured directly to the shaft 9 and do not feather. The shaft 9 is driven through pawl and ratchet mechanisms from levers mounted outside the tail gate structure and operated by manuallycontrolled hydraulic rams pivoted adjacent the upper end of the tail gate structure. More than two paddles may be provided.

    • 461,028. Rail and road trucks. GIBSON & SON, Ltd., J., and GIBSON, G. T. Nov. 16, 1935, No. 31781. [Classes 103 (iv) and 108 (i)] In a rail or road vehicle, particularly for the transport of cattle &c., and of the kind in which means are provided for draining waste from the floor and/or adjustable platforms, a preferably closed or covered receptacle is provided for collecting and storing the liquid or refuse drained, the object being to prevent spread of disease. In the construction shown the vehicle is provided with a floor 7 sloping towards its longitudinal edges, and with a single sloping platform 13, which is supported in its operative position on longitudinal rails 12, and in its inoperative position on auxiliary rails 24 near the roof. The collecting receptacles 19 are located on each side below the floor 7, and receive drainage from the floor through apertures 18, and from the platform 13 by way of troughs 14, channels 15 in the rails 12, vertical U-shaped rails 10, lower troughs 23, apertures 16 and grooves 17. Preferably the rails 10 are arranged at spaced intervals and formed as continuous hoops, the horizontal portions 10a of which assist in supporting the roof. At the junction of the floor or platform sections, overlapping metal plates are provided to prevent escape of drainage at these points.

    • 960,724. Tipping dustbins into refuse vehicles. JOHN GIBSON & SON Ltd. Feb. 5, 1963 [Nov. 6, 1961; July 2, 1962], Nos. 39598/61 and 25200/62. Heading B8E. Bins are re-used and tipped into a vehicle by a cradle which supports a plurality of bins and which is raised in guides to discharge the bins into a rear opening normally sealed by a panel. An apron is provided to cover each bin on the cradle. The cradle 15 has rollers 16a running in guides 13, and is raised by a cable 24 operated by a winch 26. Further rollers mounted on the cradle 15 enter curved guides 13b when the rollers 16a enter the ends 13a of the guides 13 so that the bin is discharged into the vehicle opening normally sealed by a panel 27. The cradle has a platform 20, a vertical wall 21 and triangular side walls 22 and is provided with pairs of arms 30, 30a mounting a flexible rubber or like apron 32 to cover each bin 33 whatever its height. The arms 30, 30a are pivoted to brackets 29 and have pivotally attached thereto arms 34 provided with rollers 38 running in channels of beams 37 extending between members of the cradle. Springs 36 normally hold the arms 34 down so that the arms 30, 30a hold the apron 32 over the mouth of the bin but when the cradle is lowered from the dotted line position shown to its lowest position stops 35 contact the arms 34 so that the apron 32 is raised to allow removal and replacement of a bin. As the cradle is raised and tipped rollers 30b on the arms 30, 30a contact the plate 27 to open it and the vehicle opening is then sealed by contact of the platform 20 and side walls 21.

    • 1,186,535. Refuse vehicles. JOHN GIBSON & SON Ltd. 3 Sept., 1968 [5 June, 19671, No. 25812/67. Heading B8E. Refuse container 7 is filled with refuse by pusher 19 pivoted at 16 and displaced by cylinder 22, the refuse entering down shoot 15, being then pushed forward by the pusher 19, compressed by pusher 28 operated by cylinder 7; and the material then being pushed forward into the container 17 at the next reciprocation of the pusher 19. The pusher 19 is formed integral with curved plate 18 on to which the material falls when the pusher is in the forward position, the plate being scraped by the shoot 15 when the pusher returns to deliver material forward at the next forward move. The rear housing 11 of the container (which carries all the above fitting apparatus) is pivoted at 29 and is connected by levers 30 to pivot points 31 mounted on the chassis 8 of the vehicle so that, when the container is caused to discharge the refuse under gravity by operation of cylinder 10, the container pivoting at 9, the housing and pushers move relatively upwards to free the discharge exit.
