    • One embodiment relates to a method of sensing motion of an optical sensor relative to a surface. A first resolution and a second resolution are set. Measurement signals are obtained from a sensor array, and the motion of the optical sensor relative to the surface is tracked using the measurement signals. The tracking of the motion in a first dimension is performed at the first resolution, and the tracking of the motion in a second dimension is performed at the second resolution. Another embodiment relates to an optical sensor apparatus for sensing motion relative to a surface, wherein the tracking of the motion is performed at a variable resolution along each of two axes. Other embodiments and features are also disclosed.

    • A method and apparatus for reducing speckle uses polarization averaging. A polarizing beam splitter divides a first polarized laser output into a second polarized laser output and a third polarized laser output. A plurality of mirrors creates an optical path difference between the second and third polarized laser outputs. The optical path difference is at least about a coherence length for the first polarized laser output. The second and third polarized laser outputs are combined into a fourth laser output, which illuminates a depolarizing screen. If a human eye or an optical system having a intensity detector views the depolarizing screen, the eye or the intensity detector will detect reduced speckle, which results from uncorrelated speckle patterns created by the second polarized laser output and the third polarized laser output. A first alternative embodiment of the invention functions without the optical path difference being at least about the coherence length. In the first alternative embodiment, a piezoelectric transducer varies an optical path length by at least about a half wavelength of the first polarized laser output. By varying the optical path length by a sufficient frequency, the eye or the intensity detector will detect the reduced speckle. A second alternative embodiment combines two orthogonally polarized laser outputs, from two lasers, into a combined laser output. The combined laser output illuminates the depolarizing screen. A third alternative embodiment rotates the first laser output with a rotation frequency to form a rotating polarized laser output, which illuminates the depolarizing screen.

    • An apparatus for selective blocking WDM channels comprises a light modulator, a diffraction grating, and a transform lens. The light modulator comprises an array of pixels. Each pixel of the light modulator is selectively operable to direct light into a first mode and a second mode. The first mode directs the light to an output. The second mode directs the light away from the output. The diffraction grating is operable to receive the WDM channels from an input and to disperse the WDM channels into a range of angles. The transform lens couples the diffraction grating to the light modulator. The diffraction grating is operable to transform the range of angles of the WDM channels into a range of spatially distinct positions along the array of pixels of the light modulator without overlap of two of the WDM channels on an individual pixel. In operation, the light modulator directs at least one of the WDM channels into the second mode while directing a remainder of the WDM channels into the first mode. The light modulator is capable of operating with a large dynamic range, thereby enabling equalization of select, transmitted WDM channels as well as blocking any arbitrary channels over the spectral range of operation.

    • A method of reducing speckle includes dividing a laser illuminated area into phase cells, subdividing the phase cells into cell partitions, and applying a temporal phase variation to the cell partitions within an integration time of an intensity detector viewing the laser illuminated area. An apparatus for reducing speckle includes illumination optics, a diffuser, and projection optics. The illumination optics couple a laser illumination to the diffuser, which is located in a first image plane. The diffuser divides the laser illumination into the phase cells and subdivides the phase cells into the cell partitions. The diffuser also applies the temporal phase variation to the cell partitions. The projection optics project an image of the first image plane onto a diffuse surface. A display apparatus adds a light modulator to the apparatus for reducing speckle and places the light modulator in a third image plane located between a laser source and the diffuser. The diffuser includes first and second diffuser cells, each of which include first and second diffuser cell partitions. In use, the first diffuser cell partitions induce a first relative phase of zero while the second diffuser cell partitions induce a second relative phase of pi radians. The first and second diffuser cell partitions of the first diffuser cells are preferably arranged in a first Hadamard matrix pattern. The first and second diffuser cell partitions of the second diffuser cell are preferably arranged in a second Hadamard matrix pattern.

    • A method and apparatus for reducing laser speckle in a laser illuminated system where a line illumination produced by a laser is scanned across a diffuse service is preferably incorporated in a display apparatus where a two dimensional image is produced on a display screen. The display apparatus includes a light modulator, a wavefront modulator, and a projection/scanning optical arrangement. The light modulator modulates a laser illumination to form a line image made up of a linear array of pixels. The wavefront modulator varies a spatial phase across a width of the line image thus forming a phase modulated wavefront. The projection/scanning optical arrangement projects the line image onto the display screen and scans the line image over the display screen. The phase modulated wavefront produces multiple speckle patterns that are averaged as the line image is scanned and, thus, produces the reduced laser speckle.
