    • A safety mechanism for a hedge trimmer is disclosed. Thumb catches 1032, 1048, together with corresponding locking members are initially biased downwardly relative to corresponding actuator levers 1010, 1014, as a result of which actuation of a motor of the hedge trimmer is prevented. This prevents inadvertent one-handed actuation of the hedge trimmer. In order to actuate the hedge trimmer, the user holds one of the actuator levers 1010, 1014 the corresponding thumb catch 1032 or 1048 upwardly, which causes movement of the other thumb catch towards its release position to allow pivotable movement of the actuator levers 1010, 1014 relative to a handle of the hedge trimmer. Movement of one of the actuator levers 1010, 1014 relative to the handle brings the lever 1018 into engagement with the electrical switch assembly 1008 to actuate the motor of the hedge trimmer. When the actuator levers 1010, 1014 are released, torsion springs urge the actuator levers 1010, 1014 and locking members outwardly relative to the handle housing 1004, as a result of which the locking members are urged into a locking position to prevent further actuation of actuator levers 1010, 1014 until the thumb catches 1032, 1048 have again been slid out of their locking position.

    • There is disclosed an actuation mechanism for actuating a power tool. The actuation mechanism comprises a cable assembly comprising at least one outer cable (41) arranged coaxially around an inner cable (40), wherein the inner cable (40) is adapted to slide axially relative to the outer cable (41). The actuation mechanism also comprises at least one electrical contact (42) connected to the cable assembly and a plurality of switch members (51, 54) connected to the cable assembly. In use, actuation of at least one predetermined one of the switch members causes the inner cable to move relative to the outer cable to close the electrical contact and actuate the power tool. By providing a coaxial cable assembly, having inner and outer cables connected to a plurality of switch members and arranged such that movement of the inner and outer cables relative to one another closes the electrical contact (42), this provides the advantage that a power tool with a two handed dual-switching mechanism can be actuated without the need for two independent electrical contacts wired in series, thereby reducing the amount of electrical wiring and components needed.

    • A handle assembly for a power tool is disclosed, in which the power tool has a housing, a motor provided in the housing, and an output shaft adapted to be caused by said motor to actuate a working member extending from the housing along a first axis (A-A). The handle assembly (102) comprises a front handle (106), a rear handle (107) integral with the front handle, and a mounting portion adapted to be mounted to the housing of the tool, wherein the front handle (106) forms an obtuse angle with the axis (A-A) of the working member in use. This last feature makes the power tool more comfortable for a user to operate, provided that the centre of mass of the power tool lies in the region between the front handle (106) and the rear handle (107). This will usually be the case, since the heaviest parts of the tool are generally the working member and the motor housing thereof. Thus the user does not have to stretch his forward arm as far relative to the rear handle (107) as he would have to do when using the handle assembly of a conventional power tool of this type.

The engaging mechanism (38) is configured so that rotational movement of the engaging mechanism (38) translates into an axial sliding movement. Rotational movement of the engaging mechanism moves the second gear (36) into and out of driving engagement with the first gear (32) depending on the direction of rotation.
