[Class 108 (ii).] In vehicles having two parallel axles, two springs on the same side of the vehicle are interconnected by equalizing mechanism which includes a lever fulcrumed on the frame and connected to the springs at points situated on the same side of its fulcrum. In the construction shown in the Figure, the two springs 14, 15, one for each axle, are pivoted at their forward ends 31, 32 to the vehicle frame or to a bracket 30. The rearward ends are connected by linkwork to two points 28, 117 on one side of the sliding fulcrum 21 of a lever 20. The rear spring 15 is connected to the point 28 by a simple link 26, while the front spring 14 is connected to the point 117 through a rocking lever 16. Lateral movement of the rocking lever is prevented by curved guides 37 on the side frames. In a modification the sliding fulcrum 21 is replaced by a pivot and a short link connects the adjacent ends of the equalizing lever 20 and the rocking lever.

    • 301,606. Morton, C. R., Robertson, N. D. G., and Smith, L., (trading as Wayne Electrical Co.). Oct. 21, 1927. Apparatus for automatically taking up slack of conductors, of the type described in Specification 184,518, in which swivelling arms support a spring-controlled cable reel D, one arm being fitted with a gravity catch to retain the reel D with the cable extended, is now formed with a second gravity catch pivoted to work in the opposite direction to prevent the cable continuing to pay out when the lamp supported is of weight greater than the strength of the spring. In the embodiment a bracket A carries a swivel B with arms C, C which support a spring controlled reel D. The arm C is fitted with a catch E to retain the cable extended against the spring action. The catch E is pivoted on a pin e passing through a projection c on the arm C, a finger e engaging a recess in a recess c in a projection c . When the catch E is operative, a projection e on the face d of the reel D is held in a recess e in the catch E. A second catch F, pivotally mounted on a pin c carried by a projection c of the leg C', is adapted to engage pins f on the face d of the reel D. A finger f on the catch F engages a recess c in a projection c of the arm c .

    • 471,893. Kinematograph apparatus. MAYTUM, J. A., and SMITH, L. Feb. 11, 1936, No. 4157. [Class 97 (i)] A beater feed mechanism is operated by a crank cam or the like 9 located between the beater 13, Fig. 1, and a pivoted arm 11 bearing a shutter 12, the crank &c. being connected to the beater and the shutter arm by links 19 and 18 respectively so that rotation of the crank oscillates both shutter and beater. The film 2, fed by a sprocket 3, is pulled intermittently through the gate 4 by the beater 13, which is preferably in the form of a segment of a cycloid, and passes over a take-up sprocket 4 rotating on the same axis as the beater. The driven shaft 8 of the crank 9 is coupled to the sprocket 5 by a six-to-one reduction gear, and each of the sprockets 3 and 5 has a circumference equal to the length of six pictures so that the film is advanced by one step for each complete turn of the crank 9. The gate 4, Fig. 5, has an aperture a, and a pressure plate 22 carrying pins 23 and pressed against a front plate 26 by springs 28.
