[Class 80 (iii)] A self-locking coupling for use in operating gear for sliding windows or the like comprises a fixed cylindrical casing 10 receiving a driving member having a handle engaging portion 18, a bearing journal' 12, a flange 19 and axially extending lugs 24. The latter co-operate with loose segmental plates 26 having a curved surface engageable with the inner surface of the casing 10. A spring 21 fixed in a groove in the flange 19 has dragging effect on the casing. The driven member comprises a pinion 29, for engagement with a rack on the window, and a cam 31 approximately elliptical with flats 32. The cam 31 engages between the plates 26. A pin 36 centres the driving and driven members. Rotation of the driving member will cause rotation of the driven member by engagement of the lugs 24 with the plates 26. Should the driving member be stationary and the driven member be turned, then the cam 31 will cause axial separation of the plates 26 and these will frictionally grip the casing 10 and locking will result.

    • 392,981. Drum controllers. EVANS, R. M. L., Roselands, Harboro' Road, Ashton-on- Mersey, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Dec. 2, 1931, No. 33426. [Class 38 (iii).] A controller comprises a main drum 1 actuable to various positions on either side of a zero by a handle 21, and retained in such positions by a notched plate 22, which may be devoid of notches at the two extreme positions, so that the drum is returned to an intermediate position by a spring 35 when the handle 21 is released from an extreme position. An auxiliary drum 2 is urged away from its zero position by a weighted lever 62, but is restrained from movement by a roller 71 thereon engaging a cam 70 of the drum 1, until the drum 1 is displaced, and is returned to zero when the drum 1 is returned to zero. The speed of movement of the drum 2 is limited by a pendulum escapement device 82, 86. Movement of drum 2 from its zero position can be prevented by a coil 100 energized by the back E.M.F. of the motor, so that upon sudden reversal of the drum 1, the drum 2 cannot move from its zero position until the motor has slowed down sufficiently. The drum 1 may prepare the armature and field circuits and effect release of a brake, and the drum 2 may connect the circuits to the power supply, exclude resistance, and in the extreme positions cause field weakening.
