    • A printing apparatus (10) has at a printing station (11), a print head (12) with an array (13) of heating elements individually selectable by a computer controller (15), a feed path (16) for feeding carrier ribbon (18) through the printing station (11), the carrier ribbon (18) carrying a layer of thermally sensitive print medium, pixels of the thermally sensitive print medium being in use deposited on a print area of a substrate (20), by selectively energising the heating elements, as the substrate (20) and print head (12) are relatively moved, the apparatus (10) including a backing member (22) and the substrate (20) being positioned in use between the backing member (22) and the carrier ribbon (1.8), and wherein the print head (12) is mounted by amounting structure (25) for generally linear movement towards and away from the substrate (20), one of the mounting structure (25) and print head (12) including a projecting part which projects towards the other and at least during printing engages with the other of the mounting structure (25) and print head (12), and there being a resilient member (31) between the mounting structure (25) and the print head (12) which allows resiliently resisted movement between the mounting structure (25) and the print head (12) with the projecting part engaged with the other of the mounting structure (25) and print head (12) and there being at least one fastener (30) to couple the mounting structure (25) and print head (12) together.

    • A method of printing utilises a printing apparatus (10) having a base (B), a printing station (9) where a print head (11) is mounted, the print head (11) including a plurality of printing elements (11 a ) which are selectively energisable to generate an image on a substrate (13) upon there being relative movement between the substrate (13) and the print head (11), the print head (11) being moveable relative to the base (B), and the apparatus (10) including a sensor device (33) to sense the speed of the substrate (13) as the substrate (13) moves relative to the base (B) adjacent to the printing station (9), and a controller (30) to receive input signals from the sensor device (33) and to control print head (11) movement relative to the base (B) to achieve a desired relative speed between the print head (11) and the substrate (13), and wherein the method includes predicting when the speed of the substrate (13) relative to the base (B), as the substrate (13) advances, will be less than a predetermined speed, and in response, moving the print head (11) at the printing station (9) to a downstream extreme position ( b ) of print head travel, and during printing of an image, moving the print head (11) from the downstream extreme position (b) towards the upstream extreme position ( a ).

    • A printing apparatus ( 10 ) includes a carrier ribbon supply tool ( 12 ) and a carrier ribbon take-up spool ( 16 ), a print head ( 22 ) having a plurality of heating elements which are individually addressable and energizable selectively to remove pixels of marking medium from the carrier ribbon ( 14 ) during a printing operation, a first motor ( 13 ) which when the printing apparatus ( 10 ) is operated in a first configuration, moves the print head ( 22 ) during a printing operation relative to a substrate ( 15 ) on which an image is to be printed and when the ( 10 ) is operated in a second configuration, the first motor ( 13 ) moving the carrier ribbon ( 14 ) relative to the print head ( 22 ) during a printing operation, and there being a second motor ( 25 ) which is operative when the printing apparatus ( 10 ) is operated in the first and second configurations to advance carrier ribbon ( 14 ) from which pixels of marking medium have been removed in a previous printing operation, onto the carrier ribbon take-up spool ( 16 ), the printing apparatus ( 10 ) being configurable to either of the first and second printing apparatus ( 10 ) being configurable to either of the first and second configurations.

    • A printing apparatus (10) includes a printing station (11) at which a print head (12) is provided, the print head (12) being moveable in a first direction towards a printing position in which in use the print head (12) is urged towards a substrate on which an image is to be printed to transfer ink from an inked carrier ribbon (14) disposed between the print head (12) and the substrate to the substrate, and a second opposite, rest, position in which in use the print head (12) is spaced away from any substrate to permit substrate to be moved to, through and from the printing station (11), there being a solenoid operated actuator (24) for effecting print head (12) movement under the control of a controller (21), the apparatus (10) further including a storage spool (15) which stores a supply of the inked carrier ribbon (14), a take-up spool (16) for taking up used ribbon, and a ribbon feed path between the storage and take-up spools (15, 16) through the printing station (11), at least the take-up spool (16) being rotatable by a drive motor (56), and wherein the apparatus (10) includes a body member (20), the storage and take-up spools (15, 16), the entire ribbon feed path and the print head (12), being mounted at one side of the body member (20), and the drive motor (56) being mounted at a second side of the body member (20), and wherein the solenoid operated actuator (24) is in direct heat conduction relationship with the body member (20).
