The briquettes are supplied to the lower stage of the combustion gasification apparatus which is divided into two portions. Air is fed into one of the two portions and the produced combustion gas containing tar is fed into the other portion from above to reduce tar content by passing the piled layer of the briquettes and discharged to the outside of the apparatus as the product gas. Then air is changed over to combustion-gasify the piled layer where tar content is reduced. The operations are alternately repeated to produce the easily usable product gas containing little tar.
