    • In a communication network, a user establishes a profile, which is stored on the network. The profile includes a default multimedia greeting and additional greetings, each associated with one or more communication identifiers listed in the profile, e.g., the identifiers are mobile phone numbers of persons who may contact the user. Each greeting is an executable data file configured to play on a mobile phone, computer, or other terminal, and may include audio and changing image multimedia content. In operation, when a calling party calls the user's terminal, the identifier of the calling party's terminal is cross-referenced to the profile. If the identifier is not in the profile, the default greeting is transmitted to the calling party from a network media server. If the identifier is in the profile, the greeting associated with the identifier is transmitted. The greeting is played until the user answers the communication.

    • In an advertisement system for an IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) network, multimedia advertisements are transmitted to end-user terminals according to three available advertising service functions: when a user terminal calls a designated phone number; when the system calls a user terminal, typically during a user-designated time window; and when a first user terminal calls a second user terminal, in the time period before the call is answered. The system includes an advertisement application server, which coordinates and manages operation of the system, and an advertisement media server, which stores and transmits the advertisement data to end-user terminals. In operation, upon determining to transmit advertisements to a user terminal, a link is established with the terminal. Multimedia advertising data (including picture/video content and audio content) is then transmitted from the media server to the user terminal over the IMS network. Users may be awarded service credits for viewing advertisements.

    • In an anti-virus system for an IMS network, anti-virus software for a wireless unit or other terminal is automatically obtained based on configuration data associated with the terminal, e.g., the terminal transmits configuration data to the anti-virus system, which uses it to select anti-virus software compatible with the terminal. Subsequently, data addressed to the terminal is scanned for viruses according to the anti-virus software. The anti-virus software may be obtained over the network for installation and use on the terminal, for either (i) on-demand or on-access virus scanning of data received by the terminal, or (ii) on-line, on-demand virus scanning. Alternatively, the anti-virus software may be obtained and implemented at the system level. Prior to incoming data being transmitted to the terminal, the system obtains anti-virus software based on the terminal's configuration, and uses the software as a basis for scanning the incoming data.

    • A print service for an IMS network or other public WAN facilitates the transfer of print data over the network from a remote wireless unit or other terminal to a printer system, for the automatic printout of hard copy documents. Upon receiving an authorized print request from the terminal, the print service negotiates establishment of a communication link for transfer of print data from the terminal to the printer system. The printer system may include, for example, a printer and print server. The terminal transmits the print data to the printer system, which automatically prints hard copy documents based on the print data, for later retrieval by the terminal user. This enables the user to remotely print documents from any location accessible through the network, without having to access a local printer or save documents for later printing.

    • A server application is interconnected with a number of client/peer terminals, as part of an IMS network. For peer-to-peer transfer of a selected data file, a client terminal establishes and accesses a secure account on the server application. From the server application, the client terminal obtains the network locations of one or more peer terminals having sections/pieces of the data file stored thereon. The client terminal contacts the peer terminals for obtaining the data file sections there from over the IMS network. The client terminal and/or peer terminals transmit accounting data to the server application through secure accounts. The accounting data relates to the amount of data transferred and/or to the data transfer rate, and may be used for billing purposes.

    • In an IPTV or other network, a server terminal is interconnected with a number of client/peer terminals. For peer-to-peer file downloads, a data file having multimedia content (e.g., a television show) is split into a number of portions for distribution among the peer terminals. The size of each file portion increases according to the chronological order of the multimedia content, such that the first data file portion (containing the beginning of the content) is the smallest, and the last portion (containing the end of the content) is the largest. Having been provided with their network locations, a terminal obtains the file portions in either a sequential mode, where the file portions are obtained in correspondence to the sequential or chronological order of the multimedia content, or a random mode, where the file portions are obtained irrespective of the chronological order of the multimedia content.

An information file associated with a data file of interest is obtained by the client from the server. The information file contains the network address of a tracker module.     • A system is implemented on an IMS network for automatically delivering multimedia greetings to calling terminals. A user configures a greeting profile stored on a called terminal, which includes at least one multimedia greeting file. The greeting file contains executable data configured for automatic execution (e.g., playback) on a mobile phone, computer, or other terminal, and may include audio, video, and/or other multimedia content. In operation, when the calling terminal initiates communication with the called terminal over the IMS network, if both terminals are multimedia capable, the network disables any resources that would otherwise be allocated for the initiated communication. Subsequently, the called terminal selects a greeting file in the profile, and transmits data from the selected file to the calling terminal. The selection is based on selection criteria in the profile and information about the calling terminal such as its ID and media capability.
