    • The serviceable pole assembly (10) of this invention has a pole (16) supported by and pivotally connected to an upstanding pole support (11) by a pivot connection (14) which is disposed adjacent the upper end of the pole support (11). The pole (16) may be gravitationally biased to pivot from its upstanding attitude to a lowered position at which a light (50) supported at the end of the pole (16) is disposed at a serviceable height. Releasable locking means (20, 22) are provided for locking the pole (16) to the pole support (11) in the elevated position. A winch assembly (35) which is demountably supported by pole support (11) is provided for raising or lowering the pole (16). The winch (35) has a selectively extendible and retractable cable (39) which may be connected to an eye (41) on the lower end of the pole (16) and spaced from the pivot connection (14) to enable the winch (35) to be operated to pivot the pole (16) between its elevated and lowered positions. i I / / ~1 / // // -A,-Ii --- A 1/ 7' -A 4-A- If -A ,~-z ~( -- A I, ~ 15 /7 4 -I'~--->~ cc- *- ;-- U - * - C- ~ - - - - - - - - -.------- t

Class 64(iii) In a heat-exchanger unit comprising an assembly of externally gilled, liquid carrying tubes b, the gill plates a are square and are each formed with parallel rows of holes through which the tubes are inserted, the holes in each row being in staggered relation to those in an adiacent row and the plates being such that air or other gas can flow between them in either of two directions at right angles to each other. The holes in the plates may have flanges g surrounding the tubes. The plates may be stiffened by a fold e at a pair of opposite edges and/or by the formation of shallow ribs f between the rows of tube holes. Two or more units each comprising an assembly of plates a and tubes b may be mounted side by side between end plates h and the air or other gas is arranged to flow over the tubes in the direction j, Fig. 2, for a maximum scouring effect or alternatively at right angles thereto in the direction k for a reduced scouring effect.

    • 621,368. Tubular heat-exchangers; cooling radiators for aircraft. SERCK RADIATORS, Ltd., MARTIN, A. M., and MONTGOMERIE, G. A. Feb. 22, 1947, No. 5249. [Class 64(iii)] Relates to apparatus of the kind comprising an assembly of tubes 3 arranged parallel with each other in concentric rings in a casing 1 in which one fluid is caused by means of transverse baffles 4, 5 (see Fig. 2, in which four tubes only are indicated) to flow radially alternately towards and away from the central axis of the tube assembly through the spaces between the tubes while the other fluid flows through the tubes. According to the invention, the circumferential spacing of the tubes increases from the outer ring 10 to the inner ring 11 of the assembly. The spacing of the tubes in two or more successive rings may be equal and the tubes may be staggered, e.g. as shown in Fig. 1. Alternate baffles 5 contact with the casing 1 at their peripheries and are formed with central holes 6 while the remaining baffles 4 provide passages for the one fluid at their peripheries and may be supplied with supporting spacers 7. The ends of the tubes 3 are expanded into the plates 2 of the casing. The apparatus may be used on aircraft for cooling the engine jacket water or warming or cooling the lubricating oil.
