    • A digital communication device is provided for decoding a data stream to generate a receiver output. In the digital communication device, a burst error detector determines burst noise locations corresponding to the data stream according to an error-check equation and accordingly generates a burst error indicator. Thereafter, an inner decoder decodes the data stream to generate an inner decoded stream, comprising an erasure marker for performing an erasure marking process on the inner decoded stream based on the burst error indicator to generate an erasure indicator corresponding to the inner decoded stream. An outer decoder then decodes the inner decoded stream with reference to the erasure indicator to generate the receiver output.

    • An exemplary embodiment of an adaptive equalizer is provided, receiving symbols to generate an equalizer output. The adaptive equalizer comprises a plurality of tap cells, a coefficient updater, a plurality of multiplexers, a controller and an integrator. Each tap cell generates a filter value from a tap data value and a coefficient. The coefficient updater provides a coefficient vector comprising a plurality of coefficients updated recursively. . Each multiplexer is coupled to a corresponding tap cell and the coefficient updater, switching between a normal mode and an estimation mode. The controller coupled to the multiplexers controls mode switching of each multiplexer based on each corresponding coefficient. The integrator coupled to the tap cells collects the filter values to generate an equalizer output.

    • A method of path gain estimation for a downlink WCDMA system. The present invention further provides a system for realizing the path gain estimation method. A transmitting device of the system comprises a first and a second antenna to transmit signals with the space time transmit diversity (STTD) scheme. The first and second antennas transmit common pilot channel (CPICH) symbols that are orthogonal to each other, and the CPICH symbols are received by a single antenna of a receiving device. The receiving device then determines the path gain by a STTD filter coefficient determination process, which includes a block selection process for selecting a combination of the CPICH symbol and a tap gain determination process for determining equations for estimating the path gain of the system.

    • An equalization method receiving a received sample to generate an equalizer output. A channel profile is first provided, comprising a main path and a plurality of echoes distributed in time domain. Echoes anterior to the main path are precursors, and echoes posterior to the main path are postcursors. The received sample is filtered with a linear equalizer (LE) comprising a plurality of taps to generate an LE output. A slicer slices the equalizer output to generate a sliced sample. The sliced sample is further sent to a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) comprising a plurality of taps to generate a DFE output. Simultaneously, an equalizer span is determined based on the channel profile. The LE output and the DFE output are combined to generate the equalizer output having the equalizer span. The equalizer span is determined by allocating the position of main tap.
