Variable-speed ratchet gearing comprises two sets of spindles E, J parallel to driving and driven shafts A, N, Fig. 1, a heart-shaped cam C, Fig. 2, secured to the shaft A engages cranks D on the spindles E so as to oscillate these spindles. Cranks H on the spindles J engage grooved blocks F on the spindles E. The spindles E are supported in a drum f which can be turned relatively to the fixed bearing-discs g, h of the spindles J, so that there is a change at the connections F, H, and the spindles J are oscillated with amplitude which varies. Toothed gears P are driven at variable speeds through ratchet connections p , Fig. 3, and one of these gears always drives a central gear M on the shaft N. The connections p' comprise balls coacting with an inner set of pockets and an outer set of teeth. The drive may be imparted to a tail-shaft S through bevel clutch reversing-gearing R , O, R'. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 6344/08, 15326/08, and 16024/10.
