[Class 75 (iv)] In a street or like lamp a light source 1 is surrounded by a rectangular or other opaque enclosure 2 having one or more apertures each of which consists of two slots 3, 5 with highly absorbing surfaces between them, whereby all emerging light passes through both slots. Direct light falling on the slot 5 and emerging from the slot 3 does not fall on any diffusing surface, whilst light reflected from the interior of the enclosure to the slot 5 cannot change its direction before issuing from the slot 3 except by reflection from matt, black or like surfaces which reduce its intensity substantially to zero. The lamp is placed above the pavement, the interior of the enclosure has a white or other highy reflecting surface, and the slots 3, 5 have their edges 7, 8 and 6, 7 in the desired limiting planes 10-10, 11-11. The slot 5 may be formed by a flat baffle 4 constituting a light trap, and this baffle, together with the slot 3, preferably extends the full width of the enclosure. The baffle 4 may be replaced by a right-angled baffle 4 1 , and the edge 8 may coincide with the corner 8 1 of the enclosure. Direct light falling on adjacent parts of the enclosure below the baffle 4 and to the right of plane 11-11 may be caught in additional light traps, or allowed to pass through holes in the enclosure and thereby provide illumination between the lamps. The angle between the planes 10-10, 11-11 may vary from 90 degrees to .180 degrees, the slots 3, 5 need not have a common edge 7, and, instead of the slots being parallel-sided, either or both of the edges 7, 8 may be bent.

    • 513,317. Lighting fittings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CQ., Ltd., and BEGGS, S. S. March 30, 1938, No. 9722. [Class 75 (ii)] In a directional lighting fitting, adapted to cooperate with a small source of light, at least one face of the fitting viewed from a preferred direction comprises a number of elements, each of which directs light into the preferred direction whereby the effective brightness of the face as seen by a normally placed observer in the preferred direction is not substantially greater than it would be if light of the same intensity in that direction came from a source uniformly distributed over the face, and at least some of the elements each directs light also into neighbouring directions, while only a few of the elements direct light into those directions in which the intensity is much less than in the preferred direction. The elements may be constituted by prisms with curved faces or by prisms with straight faces combined with flutes having their edges parallel to the edges of the prisms to form a combination optically equivalent to a prism with a curved face. Fig. 1 shows a glass drumlike fitting having on its outer surface annular prisms with curved faces 3 and horizontal edges 4 and on its inner surface prisms with straight edges 9 and'curved faces 10. Fig. 3 shows a glass panel with concentric prisms on one face and straight prisms on the other. Fig. 6 shows a part of a glass panel in which the elements 20 have a curvature in the planes perpendicular to OX and OY. Specifications 19185/93, [Class 75], and 408,419 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 217,539, 240,569, 242,686, 312,750, 337,398. [all in Class 75 (ii)], 393,972 and 398,419.

    • 511,619. Street &c. lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BEGGS, S. S. April 8, 1938; No. 10793. [Class 75 (ii)] A street lamp or like directional lighting fitting of the kind which produces a maximum light intensity in a direction highly inclined to the vertical, is provided, below the source 4, with a shallow glass bowl 1 bearing two sets of prisms 2, 3, the edges of each set lying in parallel vertical planes and the vertical planes of one set being substantially perpendicular to those of the other set. The two sets of prisms may either both spread the light so as to make the intensity in the vertical direction less than it would be from the bare source, or both concentrate the light to make this intensity greater than it would be from the bare source. The sets of prisms may be on the same or opposite faces of the bowl 1, or the latter may be constituted by two portions each carrying one set of prisms. The subject-matter of Specification 511,615 is disclaimed.

A lighting fitting comprises a housing 20, 21 for a lamp or lamps 25 provided at one side, intended to be mounted lowermost, with non-reflective louvres 23, 23a, 24, perting light to leave the fitting downwardly, at least some 23, 23a of such louvres being inclined at an angle of between 45 degrees and 85 degrees to the plane of their lowermost edges, which plane is intended to be arranged substantially horizontally in use, the interior of the housing having a light reflective surface and the lamp or lamps being screened to prevent light passing directly from the lamp or lamps through the louvres. The screen is integral with the central inclined louvre 23a. The louvres 24 are intended to prevent excessive lateral spread of light and, with the louvres 23, which are normally arranged at an angle of between 60 degrees and 70 degrees to the horizontal, form rectangular cells. The louvres are painted matt black. The housing is in two parts connected by sliding joints 22 and the interior of the part 20 is either painted white or is specularly reflective. The edge of the housing part 21 extends below the louvres 23, 23a, 24. The housing is adjustably mounted on brackets 27 by bolts and wing nuts. The lamps may be dimmed by shutters arranged to partially cover the louvres or by adjusting the voltage.

[Class 75 (iv)] In a spotlight, as used for stage lighting &c., a light source is adapted to move relative to an optical system to vary the angle of the light beam emitted and a small part of the light is directed by optical means to form an image of the light source on a screen on the lamp casing so that an indication of the divergence of the main beam is given by the position of the image on the screen. An electric lamp 3 which can be moved along the optical axis 14 of a lens 4 by rotating a threaded rod 7 is provided with a backing mirror 11 arranged to move with the lamp and provided with a pin hole 12, off set from the optical axis 14, which forms an image of the lamp's filament 2 on a translucent screen 13 mounted in the casing 15 of the fitting. Opaque members forming a number of tubes of rectangular cross section may be fitted to the inside of the casing to shield the screen from extraneous light and a light shield may be arranged on the outside of the casing. The pin hole may be elongated in one direction and may include a lens. The screen may be opaque and may be made fluorescent or phosphorescent, the latter to give an afterglow, in the event of failure of the lamp so that the position can be noted thereby permitting easy re-setting after replacement of the lamp. In a modification, the pin hole is located in an opaque member rigidly fixed to the casing between the light source and the screen.

[Classes 75 (ii) and 75 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] A directional street-lighting fitting comprises two dish-shaped glass members 1, 2 having the horizontal dimension extending across the street substantially longer than that in a perpendicular direction and formed with refracting prisms 3 having horizontal edges extending substantially the whole way around the members, the upper member having a central aperture and being supported by clips 6 from a member 4 formed with a sleeve 5 fitting on a horizontal rod projecting from a street-lighting post and the lower member having attached to its rim a metal band 7 hinged at one end 9 to a frame 8 mounted on the member 4 and secured by a catch 10 at the opposite end. A high pressure mercury vapour lamp 12 is mounted in a socket 11 hinged to a projection 13 on the member 4 and is supported by a catch 14 depending from the member 4. A magnetic deflector 15 is carried by a plate 16 hinged at 17 to a frame depending from the member 4 and secured by a catch 18. The lower suurface of the plate 16 forms a reflector. The prisms are designed in accordance with Specification 507,688.
