    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a poly(3-substituted thiophene) efficiently and economically with a high production flexibility by mixing a soluble thiophene compound having separable groups with an organomagnesium reagent and polymerizing the resultant stereochemically isomeric intermediate in the presence of a Ni(II) catalyst. SOLUTION: A stereochemically isomeric intermediate of formula II is obtained by dissolving a soluble thiophene compound of formula I having at least two separable groups in a solvent to give a solution, adding an organomagnesium reagent of the formula: R'MgX' to the solution, and refluxing it under heating. A stereoregular poly(3-substituted thiophene) of formula III is obtained by adding 0.2-1.0 mol % Ni(II) catalyst to the intermediate to start its polymerization and stirring the polymerization system under reflux. In the formulas, R is a substituent nonreactive with the organomagnesium reagent or a substituent which is originally reactive with the reagent but has been made nonreactive by protection; X and X' are each halogen; and R' is alkyl, vinyl or phenyl.
