    • An onboard refueling vapor recovery system for a motor vehicle prevents fuel vapor displaced from the vehicle fuel tank during a refueling operation from being discharged into the atmosphere and stores the fuel vapor for subsequent combustion in the vehicle engine. The system operates in parallel with a known vapor recovery system employed to minimize venting of vapor from the fuel tank through the normal fuel tank vent, this known system being inadequate to cope with the massive surge of vapor expelled during refueling which presently is vented to atmosphere through the fuel tank fill pipe. The refueling vapor recovery system includes a refueling vapor storage canister which is directly connected via a substantially unrestricted flow passage to the head space of the tank when, and only when, a standard fuel dispensing nozzle is operatively located in the fill pipe inlet. The nozzle is inserted through a seal which prevents the escape of vapor from the fill pipe. A float valve in the tank closes the passage to the refueling canister when the tank is filled and the consequent pressure increase will normally actuate the conventional nozzle shutoff mechanism. Emergency devices in the system will sound an audible signal if the nozzle shutoff malfunctions and will dump fuel from the filler pipe if manual shutoff of the nozzle does not occur in response to the audible signal. The system includes further internal pressure and flow regulating devices.

    • A toric pump has a metal impeller housing formed with a flat end face into which an annular impeller receiving recess extends to a depth which exceeds the axial thickness of the impeller mounted in the recess by an amount only sufficient to provide a minimum operating clearance for the impeller sides when an impeller cover is mounted on the housing with a flat end face of the impeller cover in sealed face to face engagement with the flat end face of the housing. A bore in the impeller housing receives a cylindrical portion of the pump drive motor to accurately locate the rotary axis of the impeller with respect to the peripheral side surface of the stripper portion of the pump housing. All impeller-stripper portion clearances are established by machining of the die cast impeller housing and the formation of a flat surface on the impeller cover. A filter cover mounted upon the impeller cover cooperatively defines with the impeller cover an enclosed filter receiving chamber having an externally accessible inlet port opening into the chamber through the filter cover and a pump inlet passage opening from the filter chamber into a pump chamber recessed into the flat end face of the impeller cover. The impeller cover is formed with an externally accessible outlet port communicating with the pump chamber. A resilient block of filter media is enclosed in the filter chamber to filter air or other fluid flowing through the chamber from the inlet port to the pump inlet passage.

    • A fill neck assembly of a vehicle fuel tank fill pipe incorporates in a single housing valving arrangements employed in an on board refueling vapor recovery system which prevents fuel vapor displaced from the fuel tank during a refueling operation from being discharged into the atmosphere. A fuel passage through the housing and connected to the fill pipe incorporates a nozzle seal near its inlet which will sealingly receive a standard fuel dispensing nozzle to enable fuel to be discharged from the nozzle into the fuel passage while preventing fuel vapor from being discharged from the fuel passage into the atmosphere. Vapor displaced from the tank by the incoming fuel passes from the tank through an outer hose loosely surrounding the fill pipe into a second passage through the housing having a vapor-liquid discriminator, a float valve and a vapor valve whose outlet is connected to a vapor receiving canister. In one embodiment, the vapor valve is opened in response to the insertion of the fuel dispensing nozzle into the nozzle seal, in a second embodiment the vapor valve is opened when the pressure of fuel vapor exceeds a set pressure. Emergency pressure relief valves are also incorporated in the housing.
