Trouser presses.- An ordinary trouser press is mounted at its ends or sides upon pivoted trunnions in vertical supports, and combined with the press, as one structure, is either a table, or another trouser press, or a box, or other useful article. Means are provided to fix the press rigidly in a horizental position. Two boards a, c, Fig. 2, are rigidly distanced apart by transverse strips d, the board a forming the base of the press, and the board c a table-top, box-bottom, or boxsupport. The board a carries the usual bolts f, and a top press-board g. Projecting from the ends of the board a are trunnions 2 provided by the ends of a rod j, Fig. 4. The trunnions engage holes in uprights n, Fig. 2, on bases n suitably stayed together. Either the press or the table or box can be turned uppermost. A wedgelike device r , carried at the end cf a spring-arm r on the upright n, can be sprung into position to hold the press firm. Detachable longitudinal rods u constitute boot racks.

[Class 120 (iii)] In a bobbin having a head or end consisting of a laminated disc comprising layers of textile fabric and paper impregnated with, and bonded together by, a synthetic resin, the paper layers are extended radially beyond the layers of fabric to form a smooth peripheral surface over Which the yarn passes as it is drawn off axially from the bobbin and out of contact with the fabric layers. As shown in Fig. 2, the face portions of the end of the bobbin consist of layers 1, 4 of paper with an intermediate portion consisting of layers 5 of textile fabric such as canvas or linen recessed at the periphery 2 below the peripheries of the layers 1, 4 ; in Fig. 4, the layers 6 next to the barrel of the bobbin are of paper, and the outside layers 7 are of fabric with the edge of the end rounded so that the layers of paper extend beyond those of the fabric.

[Class 141] In a trouser or like press, the top board is carried by a substantially square U-shaped frame, embracing both top and bottom boards of the press, and to the two parallel side rods d of which are connected the ends of transverse bars c fitted to the top board a, the yoke d of the frame being arranged to swing in bearings e provided on the back of the bottom board f near one end. At the end opposite to the hinge, a member g is pivotally carried by a frame h hinged to the bottom board, and normally urged in the direction of the top board by springs i. When the press is being closed on a pair of trousers placed hanging over the member g, the cuffs thereof are first gripped near the hinge, and the top board, in closing, causes the member g to swing outwards and upwards, so stretching the trousers. When the press is closed, it is fastened by levers j, connected by links j to a resilient member l on the back of the bottom board, and which engage the ends of one of the transverse metal bars c. The connection between the side rods d and the bars c is preferably made by additional metal strips curled round the rods. The press is provided with a pair of legs m adapted to open out and to fold flat against the bottom board.

    • The invention provides a variable torque-rate test joint for the performance testing of rotary tools for threaded fasteners. In a typical test routine a nut is repeatedly tightened by the tool and after each tightening the nut must be released and run back to its start position. The invention provides a means for rapidly releasing the pressure on the tightened nut so that it can be run back quickly and easily. The variable joint is supported by a reaction surface that is the operative face of a piston and cylinder assembly seated on a shoulder fast to a shank of the threaded fastener. A hydraulic control is provided for the piston and cylinder assembly including means for hydraulically extending the piston from the cylinder to a fixed maximum extension which defines a test position of the reaction surface, and means for hydraulically retracting the piston back into the cylinder to remove the pressure from the nut at the end of the test. During tightening the piston is extended and preferably hydraulically locked.

    • In a variable torque rate test joint, screw-threaded first and second elements are rotated relative to one another by a tool under test. At least one spring beam is cantilevered over a pivot point to exert an axial force between the first and second elements and the torque rate of the test joint can be varied by moving the pivot point to change the axial force. The first element may be a shaft that is fixed during testing and the second element is a nut rotatably mounted on the shaft, whereby the element rotated by the tool has a minimal moment of inertia. Whichever of the first and second elements is held stationary during the test may be mounted in a hub that is locked during the test but can be rotated at the end of the test to reset the test joint. Measurements may be made of the torque and the rotation angle to derive an actual torque rate of the joint, which allows correction of errors by moving the pivot point.
