    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic identification system 100 comprising one interrogator 10 and a plurality of transponders 12, 14 and 16.
      SOLUTION: The interrogator includes a transmitter 11 for transmitting interrogation signals to the transponders; a receiver 13 for receiving response signals from the transponders; and a controller 19 for processing response signals received, in order to identify the transponders by each of the responding signals. Each transponder includes a signature generator 35, 32 for generating a signature, including characteristics of the transponder, and intermittently transmits a response signal, including the signature in response to the interrogation signal. The interrogator, further, includes a signal generator 21 for generating an acknowledgement signal to be transmitted by the transmitter 11 on receipt of a response signal from one of the transponders. The acknowledgement signal comprises the signature, to thereby to acknowledge the receipt of the response signal.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for identification which includes an interrogator and a plurality of transponders. SOLUTION: The interrogator includes a transmitter for transmitting at least two independent interrogation signals to the transponders, and a receiver for receiving response signals from the transponders. The interrogator further includes a processing means for identifying the transponders from data in the received response signals. Each transponder includes a receiving means, a code generator, and a transmitting means connected to the code generator. On receipt of at least one transmitted interrogation signal, the transponder transmits a response signal containing data which identify it. The interrogation signal can be transmitted continuously or intermittently. Preferably, the interrogation signals may have respective different frequencies and are relatively narrow bandwidth signals. SOLUTION: The transponder 20 exhibits a high input impedance (>400 Ω), because its input is directly connected to an antenna 22 which matches with a high input impedance. This transponder is intended to widen the operating range of the system, by enhancing the voltage on the capacitor C 2 which is to be restored from an inquiry signal. A modulator 30 of the transponder is constituted, such that the modulation depth of the back-scattering modulation of the inquiry signal is less than 80%, more preferably, about 30% for the modulation depth.
