    • An apparatus for projecting a three-dimensional holographic image includes a coherent light source 6 and beam expander optics 8 which transmit light onto spatial light modulator (SLM) 4. Under control from processor 5, SLM 4 performs amplitude modulation to impart an amplitude pattern representative of a 2D slice of the desired 3D image projection onto the light beam. The amplitude-patterned light is subject to a Fourier transform by a lens arrangement (e.g. lens 3). The Fourier transform of the amplitude-patterned light is brought to focus upon a further, phase-modulating, SLM 2 which performs a Fresnel transform upon the light incident upon it. SLM 2 is also subject to control from processor 5. The Fresnel transform provides a lensing effect, thus different phase-modulating patterns enable associated 2D holographic image slices to be focused in adjacent image planes. Rapid sequential display of different 2D image slices is used to generate the perception of a 3D projected holographic image in the image space. Embodiments include alternative lens arrangements including a phase mask (31, figure 2) to impart a pseudo-random phase pattern on the beam to reduce noise in the projected image. An associated method of generating a holographic image is also disclosed. The disclosed apparatus and method are intended to enable rapid generation of a holographic projection without requiring processor-intensive computation of Fourier transforms of the image slices.
