    • An arrangement for charging a rechargeable battery (2) from the combined output current of three photovoltaic transducers (1a, 1b, 1c) is described. The output current from each photovoltaic transducer, e.g. (1a), is supplied via a respective diode (3a), to a charge storage circuit (4a), which selectively stores the charge from the output current until such time as there is sufficient charge to generate a suitable level of charging current for the rechargeable battery (2). The output of each charge storage circuit (4a, 4b, 4c) is supplied to the rechargeable battery (2) via respective dc-dc voltageconverters (13a, 13b, 13c) which convert the respective voltage levels of the output currents of the photovoltaic transducers (1a, 1b, 1c) to a level which matches that of the rechargeable battery (2). A multiplexer (37) is arranged between the dc-dc voltage converters (13a, 13b, 13c) and the rechargeable battery (2) to supply the outputs of the charge storage circuits (4a, 4b, 4c) sequentially to the battery (2). The invention is of particular application to dye-sensitised photovoltaic transducers which generate small output currents in response to low levels of ambient light.

    • A method is provided for predicting a response characteristic of photovoltaic transducer which is to be cut from an elongate web of flexible dye-sensitised photovoltaic material. The preferred method comprises irradiating (15) a portion of the surface of the photovoltaic material with a regular array of LEDs and sensing (16) the resulting electrical response of the photovoltaic material. It is thereby possible to predict (17) the response characteristic of the resulting photovoltaic transducer module which is to be cut from the web. Furthermore, the electrical response is used to control (24) a manufacturing process of the photovoltaic transducer by way of a feedback loop. The measured electrical response characteristic can be printed (22) in encoded form on to a side edge of the flexible web.

    • An arrangement for charging a rechargeable battery (2) from the output current of a photovoltaic transducer (1) is described. When the output voltage of the photovoltaic transducer (1) is at a high level, which indicates that the output current of the transducer (1) is sufficient to charge the battery, the transducer (1) is connected directly to the battery (2). However, if the output voltage falls below this level, then charge from the transducer (1) is stored in a capacitor (7) until such time as the voltage across the capacitor (7) rises above a predetermined level V2 at which point a switch (11) is closed which causes the capacitor (7) todischarge into the battery (2). When the voltage across the capacitor (7) falls below a lower predetermined level V3, the switch (11) is then opened so as to terminate the discharge of the capacitor (7). The invention is of particular application to dye-sensitised photovoltaic transducers which generate small output currents in response to low levels of ambient light.
