    • 1451909 Tertiary phosphine oxides HOECHST AG 28 Nov 1973 [30 Nov 1972] 55218/73 Heading C2P The invention comprises phosphine oxides of the general formula wherein R 1 and R 2 each represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and R 3 represents a phenyl group which is unsubstituted or substituted by 1 to 5 of the same or different substituents selected from chlorine and bromine atoms, or represents the group in which each of the phenylene radicals A and B is unsubstituted or substituted by from one to four of the same or different substituents selected from chlorine and bromine atoms, R 1 1 and R 2 1 , which may be the same or different, each represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R 4 and R 5 , which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and n and n 1 , which may be the same or different are each 1, 2 or 3. They may be obtained by reacting a haloalkyl compound wherein Hal is halogen, e.g. Cl or Br, with a salt, (e.g. an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of the appropriate phenol or bisphenol. If desired, the salt may be formed in situ by adding an alkali- or alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate to the reaction mixture of the halogenoalkyl phosphine oxide and the phenol. An inert solvent is preferably used as reaction medium and such solvent may be the reaction product itself. The products are useful as flame-retardant agents, e.g. in the preparation of linear polyesters and may be added during or after the polycondensation.

    • 1433210 Flame-resistant polyester compositions HOECHST AG 10 Oct 1973 [25 Oct 1972] 47318/73 Heading C3R A thermoplastic composition comprises a linear saturated polyester having a reduced specific viscosity of from 0À5-2À0 dl./g. (determined in a 1% wt. solution in a 60 : 40 phenol/tetrachloroethane mixture at 25‹ C.) and from 5À5-35% wt., based on the polyester of an alkali metal salt of a phosphinic or diphosphinic acid of the formula (R) 2 PO(OM) or (MO)(R)PO(R 1 )PO(R)(OM), where M is an alkali metal, R is a C 1 -C 16 alkyl radical, a C 6 - C 16 aryl or a C 7 -C 16 aralkyl radical, and R 1 is a C 1 -C 6 alkylene radical, a C 3 -C 6 oycloalkylene radical, an arylene radical or an arylene-alkylene radical having from 1-6 carbon atoms in the alkylene radical. The preferred polyesters are polyalkylene terephthalates which may contain upto 10 mole per cent of other aromatic or aliphatic dicarboxylic acid components and other diol components. The phosphorus compound may be added during the preparation of the polyester or to a preformed granulated polyester. Optional ingredients include inorganic fibre materials such as glass fibres and fibres of quartz, asbestos or carbon, preferably 0À1-50 microns in diameter and 0À01-5 mm. in length. Examples 1 and 2 describe compositions of polyethylene terephthalate or polybutylene terephthalate containing the sodium salt of dimethyl phosphinic acid and additionally in (1) germanium phosphite, the phosphorus compounds being added during the preparation of the polyester. In Example 3 a composition is prepared by mixing granular polyethylene terephthalate with the di-sodium salt of ethane 1,2-di-(methylphosphinic acid). The polyesters may be used for the preparation of moulded articles, films, filaments and fibres by compression moulding, injection moulding or extrusion.
