    • An article transfer mechanism is provided comprising parallel spaced apart feed plates reciprocable in the direction between the opposite ends thereof and carrying a plurality of laterally opposed article engaging feed finger members. Each feed finger member is supported for reciprocation laterally relative to the corresponding feed plate, and the feed plates support corresponding cam rods displaceable therewith and relative thereto in the direction of reciprocation of the feed plates. A cam and lever arrangement reciprocates the feed plates to displace the feed finger members longitudinally, and a second cam and lever arrangement reciprocates the cam rods to displace the feed finger members laterally inwardly and outwardly relative to the feed plates.

    • Apparatus is provided for forming a chime bead adjacent the closed end of a seamless cup-shaped metal can body and a plurality of peripheral beads intermediate the opposite ends of the can body. The apparatus includes a plurality of beading spindles receiving and supporting can bodies for movement along an arcuate path. The beading spindles are provided with beading tool portions corresponding to the chime and intermediate beads to be formed on a can body. The frame supports axially offset and sequentially arranged outer beading rails positioned along the arcuate path of spindle movement. During movement of the spindles along the path between input and output stations of the apparatus, can bodies on the spindles are rotated about the spindle axes and, as each can body moves past the outer beading rails, the beading tool portions of the spindles and the outer beading rails cooperatively engage a can body therebetween to sequentially form first the chime bead and then the intermediate beads on the can body. The outer beading rails are supported on the frame of the apparatus for adjustment of the positions of the beading rails axially, laterally and radially with respect to the axis of the arcuate path of movement of the spindles.

    • Apparatus is disclosed for making ends for metal or composite can bodies, which ends are first partially formed in a press to a cup-shaped configuration including a peripheral skirt and are then fed to a curling machine in which the skirt is contoured to facilitate application of the end to a can body. The press has a vertically reciprocable slide or slides which, together with an opposed portion of the press frame, support pairs of cooperable dies for blanking and partially forming can ends from sheet material fed horizontally into the press. Thereafter, the partially formed can ends are displaced into a horizontal plane vertically spaced from the sheet feed line, and a kicker member associated with each die set is operable in coordination with slide movement to impact against and propel the partially formed can end laterally and into a guide chute leading either to a curling machine or to an endless conveyor by which the partially formed can end is delivered to a curling machine.

    • Apparatus is disclosed for detecting flaws in sheet material of the character which increase the surface height of the sheet material. The apparatus includes a pair of horizontally parallel driven lower rolls and three upper rolls each mounted on a corresponding pivotal bracket. Two of the upper rolls are associated with one of the lower rolls and are axially spaced apart therealong, and the third upper roll is associated with the other lower roll and positioned therealong to span the space between the other two upper rolls. Each of the upper rolls is rotatably supported by the corresponding bracket for pivotal movement toward and away from the lower roll. Each upper roll bracket is provided with a pair of adjustable stop screws, one adjacent each of the opposite ends of the corresponding upper roll, and each adjustable stop screw carries a switch actuator screw which is adjustable relative to the stop screw. The apparatus frame carries a pair of microswitches for each roll actuated by a corresponding one of the actuator screws through a pivotal switch lever. Each bracket and thus the corresponding upper roll is biased toward the corresponding lower roll, and the spacing between the upper and lower roll is adjusted by the pair of stop screws. An increase in surface height of a sheet passing between the rolls causes the upper roll to be deflected upwardly to actuate one or the other or both of the microswitches.

    • A downhole pump filter filters sand and other solid particles from well fluids prior to passage of the fluids through the intake nut of a well pump. A cylindrical coupling has an externally threaded upper end which coaxially screws into the pump intake nut. The coupling also has an externally threaded lower end. A tubular member coaxially secured within the lower end of the coupling has a plurality of perforations dispersed at least along its lower portion. A filter sock may encase the perforated portion of the tubular member to block smaller sand or other solid particles from entry into the tubular member perforations. A cylindrical casing with a closed lower end and an internally threaded upper end coaxially screws onto the exxternally threaded lower end of the coupling with the tubular member and the filter sock disposed within the casing. The casing has a plurality of perforations dispersed at least along its lower poriton. The casing perforations, the filter sock, if any, the tubular member perforations and the cylindrical coupling sequentially communicate to form a flow path for well fluid into the pump intake nut.

    • Press mounted apparatus is disclosed for shearing a blank from a metal sheet and for drawing the blank to a cup-shaped configuration. The apparatus includes a fixed annular drawing die mounted on the press bed and having a drawing surface extending radially from the die opening and terminating in a circular cutting edge, and a movable tool assembly mounted on the press slide and including a draw pad and a cutter member. The draw pad is mounted on the slide for reciprocating movement relative thereto and to the cutter member. The cutter member is cooperable with the cutting edge on the fixed die to sever a blank from a sheet of material therebetween, and the draw pad has a drawing surface opposite the drawing surface of the fixed die. The two drawing surfaces engage opposite sides of the blank, and the drawing surfaces are spaced apart a predetermined distance related to the thickness of the sheet material by opposed pins carried respectively by the draw pad and fixed tool assembly. The draw clearance between the drawing surfaces varies in accordance with the thickness of the sheet material.
