    • A stand mixer comprises a head unit capable of supporting at least one tool suspended therefrom. The stand mixer further comprises support means for supporting said head unit above a receiving location for a mixing bowl such that the tool depends into said bowl location. The stand mixer further comprises means including an electric motor and associated transmission means for imparting rotary motion to said tool. The tool can thereby be bodily shifted, relative to the said bowl, along said at least one track, whilst being rotated by the motor and transmission means. Means may be provided for causing or permitting the head unit to execute motion along first and second substantially co-planar tracks relative to said support means. Further means may be provided for causing or permitting said head unit to move along a third axis substantially perpendicular to the plane of the first and second tracks. The head unit may be moved by a user or may be motor driven. The additional degrees of freedom and flexibility of motion of the tool relative to the bowl allow the path followed by the tool and thus the mixing pattern to be altered.

The food processor may comprise a safety sensor that detects the position of the sun and/or planetary gears to detect an unsafe condition, e.g. broken or damaged teeth.
