    • Light-beam scanning apparatus mainly used for a bar-code reader in a point-of-sale system to identify sold articles. The apparatus includes a light-beam emitting device, a hologram disk having a plurality of hologram segments with different diffraction characteristics mounted along its circumference and being rotated at a predetermined speed, and a deflecting device for directing the emitted light beam from the light-beam emitting device to one side of the hologram disk in a first direction. The scanning apparatus has a first mirror group including a plurality of mirrors placed in a second direction corresponding to the other side of the hologram disk, each of which mirrors is arranged to receive a diffracted light beam from a corresponding hologram segment, and a second mirror group including a plurality of mirrors, each of which mirrors is placed to receive a light beam reflected by a corresponding mirror of the first mirror group and to reflect the incident light beam to a predetermined space positioned in the first direction where an article attached with a bar-code label is moved. In the apparatus, a light path from the other side of the hologram disk to the predetermined space has a predetermined length to form a predetermined scanning light pattern in the space.

    • A bar-code reader includes a laser source for emitting a laser beam, and a scan device having reflecting surfaces for scanning a bar code with the laser beam according to a predetermined scanning pattern. A window passes the laser beam from the scan device toward the bar code. A condensing device is provided for condensing reflected light returned from the bar code which passes through the window and is reflected by the reflecting surfaces of the scan device along the route traced by the laser beam. A photosensor is provided for detecting the condensed light and for providing an electric signal in proportion to the intensity of the detected light. A replaceable emission-condensing unit incorporates the laser source, the condensing device, and the photosensor except the scan device and the window, to be mechanically correctly installed.

    • A laser beam generation control system of an optical mark reader device including a laser generating element, a laser generation control unit, a laser scanner unit for scanning a mark, such as a bar code or the like, and a signal processor unit for photoconverting a reflected light to read thereof; wherein the laser beam generation control unit turns ON/OFF the laser generation element by a predetermined duty to carry out a generation of the laser intermittently. Further, when a reflected light from the mark is detected during an intermittent generation of the laser beam, the laser generation element is turned ON to generate a laser beam continuously; and when a reflected light from the mark is not detected for more than a predetermined first time period during a continuous generation of a laser beam, the system is switched from continuous generation to intermittent generation.

    • An optical beam scanner, for reading a bar-code, which comprises a housing (10) accommodating therein a beam generator (1) for projecting a laser beam (34) along a fixed axis, a rotary mirror (30, 40) rotatable about its axis (32) and having a plurality of reflection surfaces (30a, 30b) arranged in a polygonal manner on the periphery of a body thereof, which surfaces receive and reflect the laser beam (34) projected from the beam generator (1), and a unit for driving the rotary mirror (30) to rotate at a predetermined speed during the operation. The housing is provided with a window (21) on an upper wall thereof, through which passes the laser beam (35) reflected from the respective reflection surfaces (30a, 30b) of the rotary mirror (30) for scanning a bar-code disposed above the window (21), and each of the reflection surfaces (30a, 30b) of the rotary mirror (30) is formed by a part of a circular cylindrical surface cut out along a height thereof in an elongated rectangular shape and disposed so that a ridgeline (33) is transverse to the axis (32) of the rotary mirror (30). A direction of a normal vector to the reflection surface (30a, 30b) is smoothly varied in one direction along a scanning line (X) on the reflection surface (30a, 30b) traced by sequential points of incidence of the laser beam (34) across the reflection surface (30a, 30b) when the rotary mirror (30) is rotated, whereby the reflected beam (35) traces various linear scanning patterns (A, B), each corresponding to the respective reflection surface (30a, 30b), on a plane of the window (21) above which the bar-code is scanned.

A condenser condenses reflected light return from the bar code through the window and scanning device along the route traced by the laser beam. A main body accommodates the laser source, the scanning device, the window, the condenser, and the photosensor. A cover is attached to the main body, and has an opening corresponding to the window. A buzzer is provided, to create a buzzing sound which resonates in a space formed between the main body and the cover.
