SOLUTION: Rights data are generated for a piece of digital content, and the rights data are associated with the piece of digital content to form a piece of rights-managed digital content. The rights data include parameters that govern the terms on which the content may be licensed, and may include a list of entities to which the content may be licensed, a set of one or more rights that each entity has in the digital content, and any conditions that may be placed on those rights. 摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the publishing of a digital content by a digital copyright administration (DRM) system within a limited area such as an organization. SOLUTION: A licenser receives from a requester a request including an identifier for identifying the requester and a right data correlated with the digital content. The right data contains at least one identifier and a right correlated with the identifier. The licenser finds thereafter the identifier of the requester in a directory, and finds in the directory an identifier of each group to which the requester belongs as a member, based on the identifier. The found identifier of the requester and each of the respective found identifiers of the groups are compared with identifiers listed in the right data to find conformed one, and a digital license for rendering the content is issued to the requester, using the right correlated with the conformed identifier. SOLUTION: A licenser receives a request from a requester, the request contains a right data correlated with the content, and the right data lists up a set of at least one identifier and a right correlated with the identifier. The licenser selects the set of the identifier and the right, which is set in the corresponding digital license, correlated with the identifier, and selects also a substitutive right set based on the identifier. The substitutive right set is used in stead of the right set in the right data, a license is issued to the requester using the substitutive right set, and various rules and conditions which the requester has to obey relating to rendering of the corresponding content are thereby set by the substitutive right set in the issued license. The server architecture includes a retail site, a fulfillment site, and an activation site. Each retail site is equipped with a URL encryption object, which encrypts, information that is needed by the fulfillment site to process an order for content sold by the retail site. Upon selling a content item, the retail site transmits to the purchaser a web page having a link to a URL comprising the address of the fulfillment site and a parameter having the encrypted information. Upon following the link, the fulfillment site downloads the ordered content to the consumer. An activation site provides an activation certificate and a secure repository executable to consumer content-rendering devices which enables those content rendering devices to render content. In a typical system, a license server licenses content to particular identities, and an identity server defines those identities by issuing certificates for those identities. Thus, in one embodiment, the universe of people to whom the license server can issue licenses can be expanded by adding new identity servers to the list of trusted identity servers. In another embodiment, exceptions to the general trust of an identity server can be carved out by creating an exclusion list, which excludes particular identity certificate (e.g., on the basis of e-mail address, domain name, etc.) that have been issued by a trusted identity server. In another embodiment, the universe of content for which the license server can issue licenses can be expanded by providing the license server with the private keys of other license servers.
