    • A display with orientation dependent rotatably image presents a properly oriented image in a first mounted fold-down position and a second up-right table-top position. The display folds up into a base unit when not being used for compact storage of the system. An orientation determining device is included for determining the current orientation of the display and properly orienting the image based on that current orientation. The orientation determining device is either a mechanically flipped switch, an automatic switch or an acceleration sensor. The display screen is preferably an LCD screen. Alternatively, the display screen is a light valve type display including a grating light valve system. The display is for use in a television system, computer system, video phone or browser. Infrared input devices are used to control the display and provide data to the computer system. In an alternate embodiment, a touch sensitive screen is also used as an input device.

    • A method of and an apparatus for electrically interconnecting two integrated circuits devices includes mounting the two devices face to face. A first device is mounted for example to a substrate or lead frame. The first device includes a plurality of electrical/physical mounting structures preferably positioned along one edge. The mounting structure provide both electrical interconnection and physical mounting. A second device includes a corresponding plurality of mounting structures configured as a mirror image of the mounting structures on the first device. The mounting structures on the second device are also positioned along one of its edges so that once the mounting structures are brought together in a face to face relationship, the second device cantilevers off the edge of the first device. Under certain circumstances, a dummy block can be mounted to the substrate adjacent to the first device to act as a strut or support for the second device. The mounting structures can be positioned sufficiently close to one another that surface area consumed for I/O is minimized. Another set of electrical interconnect structures can be formed on the surface of the second device on the edge opposite the mounting structures. Electrical connection can be formed to these electrical interconnect structures using conventional techniques such as tape automated bonding.

    • A single display device is mounted within a head-worn apparatus to produce both a left image and a right image. The left image is directed to a right eye of the user, and the right image is directed to the left eye of the user. When in the stereoscopic mode, the right and left images differ from each other such that when viewed by the user, the combined right and left images give the user a stereoscopic, three-dimensional effect. When worn on the head of the user, the device is properly aligned to provide the left image to the right eye and the right image to the left eye. Further, as the user moves, the present invention remains properly aligned such that the user can continue viewing the left image with the right eye and the right image with the left eye independent of movement by the user so long as the user keeps wearing the device. A plurality of pixels are collected as the display, wherein each pixel is formed of a grating light valve. The modulation of light by the grating light valve is configured to be accomplished sequentially and also sufficiently fast to multiplex both complete right and left images in a single time frame thereby preventing flicker. By using a single display, the device is inherently aligned to produce an accurate right and left images viewed by each respective eye without internal adjustments. Further, by using the grating light valve, the user is only exposed to reflected light rather than to harmful radiation such as from a cathode ray tube. Additionally, forming the display of grating light valves allows formation of two images without the use of any filters owing to the speed of grating light valves.

    • A diffraction grating light valve modulates an incident beam of light. A plurality of elongated elements each have a reflective surface. The elongated elements are suspended with their respective ends substantially coplanar. Alternate ones of the elongated elements are electrically coupled for receiving a first bias voltage. The interdigitated elongated elements are electrically coupled for receiving a second bias voltage. By applying a appropriate first and second biasing voltages, all the reflective surfaces can be maintained in a first plane. When all the elongated elements are in the first plane, the diffraction grating light valve reflects the beam of light. A predetermined group of the elongated elements, preferably alternate ones, are deformable to be substantially coplanar in a second plane which is parallel to the first plane. When the predetermined group of elements is in the second plane, the diffraction grating light valve diffracts the beam of light.
