摘要： A stabilized lactone composition comprises (a) an a -substituted b -lactone of from 4-10 carbon atoms of formula wherein R is alkyl and R1 is hydrogen or alkyl and (b) from 0.001% mole-0.5% mole based on the total composition of an addition compound of boron trihalide and an organic non-ionizable Lewis base suitably an organic compound of formula (R11)3E wherein E is nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic or antimony and each R11 is hydrogen or a C1- 20 hydrocarbon group with the proviso that two R11 together may form a divalent hydrocarbon moiety of from 4-20 C. atoms, an ether, aldehyde or ketone. An example describes compositions containing a ,a -dimethyl-b -propiolactone and one of the following; BF3(C6H5)3P, BF3 (C6H5)3N, BF3.(C2H5)2O.

Polyesters are made by catalytically polymerizing a lactone in an inert gaseous diluent in which the monomeric lactone is dispersed as a liquid discontinuous phase. The process may be carried out (i) by feeding droplets of the monomer of diameter 0À5 to 5À0 mm. into the top of a vertical column which contains the inert gas or through which the inert gas flows in countercurrent, (ii) by atomizing droplets of the monomer of diameter less than 0À5 mm. into the inert gas or (iii) by feeding the monomer into the gas in a cyclone or a Venturi tube. Preferred lactones are #-lactones, especially α,α-dialkyl-#- propiolactones. Specified catalysts are primary, secondary and tertiary amines, tertiary phosphines, quaternary ammonium and phosphonium compounds, arsines, stibines, compounds containing carboxylate ions, and organic sulphides, sulphoxides and sulphonium compounds. Specified gaseous diluents are air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons boiling below 50‹ C. Polymerization is generally effected at 60-180‹ C. and at pressures below 10 atmospheres. Examples describe the polymerization of α,α-dimethyl-#- propiolactone and α-ethyl-α-methyl-#-propiolactone.
