    • PURPOSE:To easily ionize ionizable gas contained inside a groove, to improve productivity and to obtain a wide view angle even when the groove filled with the gas is comparatively shallow by making the width of a reference electrode wider than that of a data strobe electrode. CONSTITUTION:Electrodes 112a of a groove 62a are provided with a widened width 130a, and those electrodes are connected to a common reference potential fixed to a ground potential. Electrodes 114a of the grooves 62a are connected to respectively different amplifiers 74 of a data strobe circuit 76. The respective grooves 62a are filled with the ionizable gas. In order to designate the address of a display element 56 which position is matched with the groove 62a, the gas inside the groove 62a is operated as an anode. The gas is selectively ionized by arrangement provided with the reference electrodes 112a and the row electrodes 114a operated as the anodes. The widened width 130a of the reference electrodes 112a applies a comparatively large conductive plane area to the respective grooves 62a and facilitates the ionizing of gas contained in the grooves 62a.

    • PURPOSE:To provide an electrooptic address assigning device with decreased crosstalk effect by incorporating a liquid crystal material showing such frequency reactivity that the dielectric anisotropy for the signal frequency higher than the critical frequency is almost zero. CONSTITUTION:The line electrode 20 is formed on the principal plane of a non-conductive light transmitting substrate 24, and a groove 22 is formed on the principal plane of the second nonconductive light transmitting substrate 26. A layer 28 consisting of a frequency-reactive electrooptical material such as two-frequency nematic liquid crystal is interposed between a first nonconductive light transmitting substrate 24 and a second nonconductive light transmitting substrate 26. In this constitution, it is preferable that the dielectric anisotropy DELTAepsilon of the frequency-reactive liquid crystal material in the layer 28 is rather small for the signal frequencies higher than the specific frequency fth, and more preferably, almost zero. Thereby, the frequency-reactive liquid crystal material does not substantially react with signals having higher frequencies than the critical frequency. This device includes a data driver which sends reversed data signal in a first period and non-reversed data signal in the second period to each picture element.
