摘要： Methods and apparatus are provided for presenting personalized information to consumers in a retail environment. A personalized price is determined for at least one product that is in physical proximity to the customer. The physical proximity may be determined, for example, by evaluating identifiers, such as RFID tags, associated with each customer and product. A personalized message can be also presented to a customer regarding at least one product that is in physical proximity to the customer. The personalized message can provide, for example, dietary or safety information relevant to the customer and at least one product in the proximity of the customer. The personalized information may be determined based on one or more personalized message rules.

摘要： A method of thermally poling a silica based waveguide (12) comprises exposing a region of the waveguide (12) to an electric field (for example, via capillary electrodes (22, 24) inserted into holes in the waveguide); directing a laser beam (18) into the region exposed to the electric field to effect localized heating of the region via direct absorption; and scanning the laser beam (18) over the region at a rate selected to avoid heating of the region above the glass transition temperature. Reversing the electric field while scanning the laser beam (18) allows the formation of periodic poled gratings. The waveguide (12) can comprise an optical fiber.

摘要： An optical waveguide (11) includes a region (22) which, after electrical poling of a guiding region (16), maintains an internal electric field induced by the poling potential. The internal electric field may arise from charge separation between regions (18, 20) induced by an adjacent poling electrode (12A), and region (22) acts to inhibit decay of the space charge and to increase the lifetime of the induced electro-optic effect. The waveguide may comprise a twin hole optical fiber (11) with internal electrodes (12A, 14A), where the region (22) comprises a borosilicate layer concentrically disposed about one of the electrodes.

摘要： A server computer updates client computers' copies of subscription files stored on a network. The server computer retrieves a database record from a subscription database. The database record includes at least client computer and subscription file information. The server computer checks the subscription file stored on the network for any changes which may have occurred to the file since the previous checking of the subscription file preferably by comparing the last save time stamp to a time stamp on the subscription file stored on the network. If changes have occurred, the server computer creates an update file for the client computer and transmits the update file to the client computer, preferably by electronic mail. Each database record may further contain a check interval indicating the periodicity of the checking of the subscription file for changes. The database record may further contain a time last checked field which is updated each time the subscription file is checked for changes. The subscription file is checked for changes only when the current time is equal to or greater than the time last checked plus the check interval. The subscription database is built by the server computer. The server computer receives subscription information from each client computer which includes at least the client computer and subscription file information, and this information is stored. The subscription database is stored either on the server computer's hard disk or on the network.
