    • PURPOSE:To improve the flux of light, by sealing in an excessive amount of a rare earth metal after putting it on a main electrode, to prevent sputtering from being caused by ion bombardment. CONSTITUTION:A rare earth metal such as scandium 32 is put on an electrode coil 31 to cover the tip portion of an electrode shaft 30 to lower the temperature of an electrode in lighting. As a result, the work function of the tip portion of the electrode shaft 30 is lowered to suppress the evaporation of tungsten and promote the reduction of sputtering based on ion bombardment, thereby preventing the starting voltage and go-out voltage from rising. A halogen liberated in the halogen cycle is captured by the scandium 32 not to react with silicon, so that no silicon halide is produced on the tip of the electrode and the silicon and the tungsten are kept from reacting with each other. Therefore, the tungsten scarcely clings to the wall of a bulb. Furthermore, the ratio of the scandium 32 which directly clings to the bulb wall is decreased to improve the light flux maintenance ratio.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain a ceramic resistor with a stable resistance variation to a temperature change and few cracks or breaks due to thermal expansion differences by covering the surface of a ceramic resistor heating unit with heat-proof insulating ceramics in one body in a metallic vapor discharge lamp containing a resistor together with a luminous tube in an outer tube. CONSTITUTION:A starting device 13 is made by integrating a bimetal switch 14 and resistor heating unit 15 in one unit. The resistor heating unit 15 is constituted by covering a ceramic resistor heating unit 21 with heat-proof insulating ceramics 22, and the coefficients of thermal expansion of both are small and the difference of them is also small, therefore, the rate of causing cracks on the heat-proof insulating ceramic 22 is very small. In addition, the ceramic resistor heating unit 21 has little variation due to temperature changes as compared with resistors made of a metal wire or metal film and has a characteristic that its resistance rather decreases as the temperature rises and the decreasing rate is within about 30% at a temperature of 800 deg.C, thereby its resistance value is stable. Accordingly, no effect is inflicted from temperature changes in an outer tube 10 due to the on/off of a luminous tube 11, and the starting feature is made stable as a merit.
