    • In a method and a system for controlling a plate width in a hot rolling mill having a front stage including a horizontal roll stand; and a rear stage including a vertical roll stand and a horizontal roll stand, the thickness of a thickened portion of the plate thickened as a result of rolling by the vertical roll stand of the rear stage and the plate thickness at the entrance of the vertical roll stand of the rear stage are determined; the ratio of the thickness of the thickened portion to the plate thickness at the entrance of the rear stage is calculated; the plate width at the exit of the vertical roll stand is determined; the plate width at the exit of the horizontal roll stand of the rear stage is calculated taking account of extension of the plate width as a result of reduction of the thickened portion; and the roll gap of the vertical roll stand of the rear stage is controlled in such a manner as to bring the plate width at the exit of the horizontal roll stand of the rear stage closer to a target value.

    • When rolling a steel slab along its edges to reduce its width the head end of the slab may experience a larger percentage reduction than the mid portions of the slab. A similar situation, but to a less marked extent may occur at the tail end of the slab. To avoid this disadvantage workpieces are rolled in a vertical mill stand and the roll gap of the mill stand is automatically controlled during rolling. In the combination of a vertical mill stand and a horizontal mill stand in which slabs are successively edge and flat rolled an automatic control system is employed to control means for adjusting the roll gap of the vertical stands during the rolling of at least a terminal length of the slab adjacent an end so as to produce a width profile such that after subsequent horizontal rolling the width of the terminal length is not less than the width of the remainder of the slab.

CONSTITUTION: In a hot rolling method comprising rough rolling and finish rolling consisting of widthwise rolling and thicknesswise rolling, the method for hot rolling high tensile strength strip having less widthwise thickness deviation comprises a step of obtaining a rough rolled bar on which dog bone is formed by performing dummy rolling in the final thicknesswise rolling after performing the final widthwise rolling a slab for high tensile strength strip in the rough rolling; and a step of finish rolling the dog bone formed rough rolled bar so that thickness of the edge part is compensated by the dog bone, wherein finish rolling rolls having minus crown are used in the finish rolling, and wherein the dog bone formed on the rough rolled bar has a size of 5.46 mm or less.
