    • A printer (11) or other sheet media handling equipment is provided with an output diverter (51) which is pivoted with respect to the printer (11) in order to discharge the sheet media (15) to selected ones of a plurality of output bins (19). The pivoting maintains a relative alignment between an output paper path of the printer (11) and the selected bin (19) by shifting the sheet media path at the diverter (51). In order to maintain registration of the diverter (51) with the printer's output (17), a funnel-shaped input consisting of a pair of panels extending across a width of the printer's output are used to guide the paper to the diverter (51). The funnel shape permits the diverter (51) to pivot and remain within registration of the printer's output (17).

    • A sorter and receiving tray for paper sheets is described, including the control of each paper sheet so that there is positive displacement of the sheet into the receiving tray. The device disclosed includes both a top and bottom feeding mechanism, each of which controls with positive displacement the placing of the sheet into a receiving tray.Additionally, the sorter of the present invention controls the curl of the paper and includes fixed trays which can be fully loaded with paper, inasmuch as the curl problem is eliminated. The sorter also includes a signal device to indicate when a receiving tray is filled with paper. The sorter and receiving tray of the present invention is particularly arranged to avoid interference between the sheets of paper, and to eliminate paper jams, mis-sorts, and the like.

    • A document storage device includes a document storage rack, a document distributing apparatus, and a transmitting roller. The document storage rack defines a first storage space and a second storage space. A first protecting door is mounted on the document storage rack to close and lock the first storage space. The second storage space is readily accessible. The document distributing apparatus includes a controlling pole and a first distributing roller connected to the controlling pole. The transmitting roller transmits a document to the first distributing roller. The controlling pole moves the first distributing roller between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the first distributing roller transmits the document into the first storage space. In the second position, the first distributing roller transmits the document into the second storage space.

    • A sorter in which the various paper trays of the sorter may be randomly accessed is disclosed. The sorter includes a plurality of paper-receiving trays which are stationarily arranged in vertically spaced-apart relationship to one another at the downstream end of the sorter, and an upstream paper transporting and guiding device for receiving paper sheets from an upstream machine and delivering the same to selected ones of the paper trays. The deflecting device is pivotable at its upstream end and has its downstream end arcuately movable between the various vertical positions of the paper trays. A suitable indexing mechanism is provided for indexing the paper transporting and guiding device to selected ones of the paper trays. In one embodiment the indexing mechanism comprises a DC motor geared to a sector gear carried by the paper transporting and paper guiding device, and in another embodiment the indexing mechanism comprises a Geneva Drive mechanism, including a pin wheel and a star gear wheel, coupled between the drive motor and the sector gear carried by the paper transporting and guiding device. Driven rollers positioned at the downstream end of the paper transporting and guiding device assist in transferring the paper sheets from the device to the paper receiving trays.

    • The present invention is directed to a chute return mechanism for use in combination with a photocopier collator wherein a movable paper chute is disposed between a discharge slot of a photocopy machine and an entry point of a plurality of bins mounted adjacent thereto. The chute return mechanism controls the movement of the movable paper chute so that copies received from the photocopy machine are directed successively into one of the plurality of bins. The chute is successively diverted to each of the predetermined number of bins by means of a pulse from the photocopy machine which indicates that a copy has been produced and discharged to a bin. The pulse actuates a solenoid which controls a cam latch of the chute return mechanism thereby releasing a follower which is attached to the movable paper chute. Actuation of the solenoid successively lowers the paper chute to divert successive sheets of photocopies to each of the predetermined number of bins. After the pulse from the photocopy machine has actuated the solenoid, the latch is pulled away from the solenoid by means of a spring. After a predetermined number of photocopies have been diverted to each of the successive bins, a second solenoid is actuated to impart motion to a lever which returns the follower member connected to the movable paper chute to its original position to repeat the cycle.

    • The present invention is directed to a photocopier collator wherein a movable paper chute is disposed between the discharge slot of a photocopy machine and the entry point of a plurality of bins mounted adjacent thereto. The movable paper chute is designed to receive copies from the photocopy machine and to direct them successively into one of the bins. The chute is successively diverted to each of the predetermined number of bins by means of a pulse from the photocopy machine which indicates that a copy has been produced and discharged to a bin. The pulse actuates a solenoid which controls a cam latch thereby releasing a follower, which is attached to the movable paper chute. Actuation of the solenoid successively lowers the paper chute to divert successive sheets of photocopies to each of the predetermined number of bins. After the pulse from the photocopy machine has actuated the solenoid, the latch is pulled away from the solenoid by means of a spring. After the predetermined number of photocopies have been diverted to each of the successive bins, a second solenoid returns the movable paper chute to repeat the cycle.
