    • The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine (100) comprising a first set of cylinders comprising: a first two-stroke compression cylinder (102) housing a first compression piston (114) connected to a first crank shaft (122); a first four- stroke combustion cylinder (106) housing a first combustion piston (124) connected to a second crank shaft (132), said first four-stroke combustion cylinder (106) being configured to receive compressed gas from said first two-stroke compression cylinder (102); and a first two-stroke expansion cylinder (110) housing a first expansion piston (134) connected to said first crank shaft (122), said first two-stroke expansion cylinder (110) being configured to receive exhaust gas from said first four- stroke combustion cylinder (106), wherein the said first compression piston (1 14) is positioned to reach a lower end position within said first compression cylinder (102) and said first expansion piston (134) is positioned to reach an upper end position within said first expansion cylinder (110) when said first combustion piston (124) reaches a lower end position within said first combustion cylinder (106); wherein said second crank shaft (132) is configured to rotate with a speed of at least twice the speed of said first crank shaft (122).
